UAS Mission Report
Document and ensure compliance for drone flights
UAS compliance procedures
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) permits drone flights under the Small UAS Rule (Part 107). In order to fly a drone, a pilot must obtain a Remote Pilot Certificate and comply with the regulations, operating requirements, and procedures for safely flying drones.
Project overview
The UAS Mission Report survey was provided by the Southern Company UAS program and is designed to serve as a method of documenting a pilot’s compliance with FAA regulations, safety procedures, and operational preparedness. The survey was based on FAA requirements for Part 107 pilots and the Southern Company’s UAS General Operations Manual.
Relevant questions and branching logic
The survey prompts the pilot to enter the details of the planned flight and displays relevant information or questions based on the information that was entered. This allows the survey to use branching logic, where each form section is dependent on the answer to the previous question.
Relevant questions are essential to surveys like the UAS Mission Report because they allow the survey to only show the information or questions that are relevant to the pilot’s situation.
Other ways to streamline data entry
In addition to relevant questions, the UAS Mission Control survey includes the following survey design choices that help guide the UAS pilot through the form and reduce data entry time:
- A calculation can populate a question with a value based on responses to previous questions.
- A note question can be used to provide a user with context or additional information pertaining to the survey or a particular question.
- Metadata questions don't require any input from the user and automatically collect data such as the device ID, username, or email address.
