ECAAS (Enabling Crop Analytics at Scale) Field Mapper

Document ground truth data to support agricultural monitoring and management systems

ECAAS Field Mapper

Ground data collection can be costly and often requires an internet connection. The  ECAAS  (Enabling Crop Analytics at Scale) form helps data collectors easily document agricultural ground reference data offline, as they walk around the field. Users can report when crops were planted and harvested. They can accurately map the boundary of fields using the Survey123 streaming tool and the device's GPS, and record the corresponding crop properties.

Project Overview

To complete the ECAAS Field Mapper survey, the data collector enters personal information, before entering information about the crops and yields of the field, including the harvesting date, the primary crop, and any secondary crops. Then, using the streaming tool, the data collector walks around the field boundary to delineate its size and shape using their device's GPS. They can also submit photos of the field.

Streamlining data entry

The following survey design features help data collectors only fill in necessary fields, saving time and effort.

  • Relevant—The crops and yield questions will only appear if the data collector selects that the field is fallow.
  • Choice filter—The type of crops shown changes depending on whether the data collector chooses annual, perennial, or tree for the crop type.
  • Stream field boundary tool—Accurately collect the size and shape of a field boundary as a polygon using the streaming tool.
