In 2025 the city completed road safety improvements at multiple locations.
Three road diets were constructed at the following locations:
- S 260th Street/S 259th Place,
- Meeker Street, Lincoln Avenue N, and W Smith Street; and
- 4th Avenue N.
A compact roundabout was also constructed at the intersection of 108th Avenue SE and SE 264th Street. The projects provide better visibility and separation for all modes of travel.
The projects were funded by a city safety program grant from the Washington State Department of Transportation.
Completed Projects
2024 also saw completion of an upgrade for 132nd Ave SE.
The project included construction of a continuous pedestrian facility on the west side of 132nd Avenue SE from SE 240th street to SE 228th Place with curb separation. Mill and overlay of the roadway was also completed. This project continued Phase I and II improvements funded by TIB grants awarded in 2016 and 2017.
The installations were funded through competitive award of a Transportation Improvement Board grant.
Proposed Project to be Added
Reith Rd - Military to 38th Ave S
This project would convert the roadway to three lanes - or one lane in each direction with one or more left turn pockets. The project would also add bicycle and pedestrian facilities from Military Rd to 38th Ave S.
Proposed Project to be Added
Kent/BNSF Railway Corridor Crossing Safety Study
Building on successful partnerships to create a quiet zone in Kent, this project will allow the City to evaluate eight crossings for improvements that could prioritize additional grade separations of the busy BNSF corridor.
This effort is funded in partnership with BNSF Railway, Sound Transit, Amtrak, through a grant from the Federal Railroad Administration.
