Statement from The US Department of Justice:

"The FBI has gathered crime statistics from law enforcement agencies across the nation that have voluntarily participated in the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program since 1930. These data have been published each year, and since 1958, have been available in the publication Crime in the United States (CIUS). As a supplement to CIUS, the FBI, in cooperation with the Bureau of Justice Statistics, provides this site that allows users to build their own customized data tables."

US Population Density Map

Population Density in the United States-Copy

THE CORRELATION BETWEEN CRIME AND POPULATION DENSITY

Both maps show that the higher the population density the higher the crime index is in said area. The crime index area is highest in urban areas for an example Los Angles have a lot of crime and there population is one of the highest in the country. If you take a State like South Dakota the population is small so the likelihood of crimes being committed is as well. So this proves that crime is less likely in rural areas and more likely in urban areas due to population density.

Areas with an increase in violence in recent years consist of high population areas like The LA area, New Orleans, New York City, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and cities throughout the Midwest.

On the FBI's top ten list of most violent cities you can see that cities 1,2,3,4,5, and 8 all are located in the mid west where the population of people are not as high but each of the cities is considered one of the most populated in their respective states.

Excel Spread Sheet of US Population

Here is an Excel spread of the US Population since 2010 and its growth over the last 9 years. as you can see the Midwest and Northeast are the least populated compared to the South and the West.

Some of the largest states in terms of population, California, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas and Virginia.

Property Crime:

This is an Excel spreadsheet of the violent crimes in the US. As you can see Aggravated assault is the most common among crimes in the United States.

You can also see that the States with the most people living in it have the highest amounts of crime in them.

Overall

You can see a direct correlation between population and Crime Index. California has the highest population and one of the highest crime index due to the overwhelming amount of people living in both Los Angles and Stockton. This is also parallel with large cities like St. Louis, Detroit, and Baltimore. The overall consensus is that the more people that live in an urban area the more crime there is. The mapping and data prove this consensus consistently throughout this story map.
