Through the generosity of philanthropist David M. Rubenstein since 2013, and the Kislak Family Foundation since 2023, the Library of Congress Literacy Awards Program honors literacy initiatives that have made outstanding contributions to increasing literacy in the United States or abroad.

The David M. Rubenstein Prize ($150,000) is awarded to an organization, based either inside or outside the United States, which has made an outstanding and measurable contribution to increasing literacy levels and has demonstrated exceptional and sustained depth in its commitment to the advancement of literacy.

The 2024 David M. Rubenstein Prize winner is


The Kislak Family Foundation Prize ($100,000) is awarded to an organization based either inside or outside of the United States with an outsized impact on literacy relative to its size and/or years of operation.

The 2024 Kislak Family Foundation Prize winner is


The American Prize ($50,000) is awarded to an organization based in the United States for making a significant and measurable contribution to increasing either literacy levels in the U.S. or the national awareness of the importance of literacy. 

The 2024 American Prize winner is


The International Prize ($50,000) is awarded to an organization that is based either inside or outside the United States for their significant and measurable contribution to increasing literacy levels in a country other than the U.S.

The 2024 International Prize winner is


Successful Practices Honorees

Each year, up to 15 additional organizations are named Successful Practices Honorees. These honorees are awarded $10,000 each and selected for their successful implementation of a specific literacy practice.

The Literacy Awards Program honors 15 organizations for implementing successful literacy practices in the following five categories:

Elevating Youth Voices

Empowering Communities

Engaging Instructors and Mentors

Expanding Support Networks

Pioneering Innovative Approaches to Literacy


Emerging Strategies Honorees

For the first time in 2024, thanks to the generosity of the Kislak Family Foundation, the Literacy Awards Program recognizes promising literacy initiatives that are in their early stages of development (5 years or less). Known as the Emerging Strategies Honorees, these up-and-coming literacy initiatives are awarded $5,000 each for demonstrating significant promise and creativity in their approach to literacy.

Since 2013, the Library of Congress Literacy Awards Program has awarded more than $3.5 million in prizes to more than 200 outstanding organizations engaged in ensuring that children and adults build critical literacy skills.
