Dundee Active Freeways - Arbroath Road Corridor

Introduction

Sweco have now completed the feasibility stage of the Arbroath Road - Dundee Active Freeways project. The optioneering process of the project allowed a preferred route option to be identified. This is shown in the image below.

For more information on the feasibility stage, please see the Feasibility Stage Summary section of this Storymap.

Concept Stage

Sweco have completed the outline concept design for the proposed active travel upgrades on Arbroath Road and are looking for your feedback to inform the finalised concept design.

We firmly believe that a successful project can only be delivered when the needs of those that will use the infrastructure are taken on board. Your input and comments on the proposed scheme are therefore key and will help us shape the proposals.

Note: The designs shown within this Storymap are in draft form and are subject to change. Traffic modelling will be required in the next stage of design in order to confirm the feasibility and deliverability of the proposals.

We would appreciate if you could review and complete the survey below. Your feedback will allow us to enhance the concept designs and ensure that the proposals are suitable for all.

Feasibility Stage Summary

During the Feasibility Stage, the potential to implement an Active Freeway was assessed, linking the communities of Douglas and Angus, Craigie, Craigiebank and District to the City Centre via many key trip attractors. The image below shows the options that were considered.

A combination of community engagement feedback and results from our route option appraisal allowed us to identify a preferred option. The following displays a summary of the main engagement points during the feasibility stage:

  • Arbroath Road needs to be more coherent for users, with implementation of more crossing points and links to adjacent trip attractors.
  • The carriageway of Arbroath Road is exceedingly wide with high speed traffic due to the alignment of the route. Reducing the width and speed limit would support the attractiveness of using an Active Freeway route.
  • The majority of feedback received was in favour of Option A, due to its directness, available space and manageable gradients.
