MANABAS COAST

All the different pilot projects are exploring various types of Nature-based Solutions for coastal defence. However, none of these projects are fully matured yet, and there’s still a lot to learn from one another to improve their effectiveness.

The path to mainstreaming NbS —making them the standard in coastal management— is still challenging. To facilitate knowledge exchange between projects within MANABAS COAST, a baseline assessment was conducted as the initial step in identifying key areas for improvement. The baseline assessment provided a clear snapshot of where our NbS pilot projects currently stand. It helped identify what each project needs to successfully implement and mainstream NbS, from early-stage efforts to more advanced initiatives. This assessment highlighted key challenges, like gaps in long-term data and the need for clearer communication, while also showing the importance of collaboration between local authorities and stakeholders. Moving forward, the insights gained will guide us in developing practical tools and strategies to ensure NbS become a core part of coastal management across Europe.

Some of the common questions that the baseline assessment revealed were transformed into concrete "how-to" topics, highlighting areas where participants wish to learn more, share knowledge with one another, and inspire each other through the examples of the pilots.

To successfully mainstream Nature-based Solutions, education and knowledge sharing are essential. By educating the next generation of coastal managers, partner organisations, but also the broader public, we can close knowledge gaps, foster collaboration, and build the expertise needed to implement and sustain NbS at scale. Empowering people with the right information is fundamental to making NbS a standard practice in coastal management across Europe.
