About GIS DAY at UAB
This year marks the 25th anniversary of GIS Day global celebrations and this year UAB will be celebrating GIS Day 2024 on November 20th, 2024.
GIS Day - November 20, 2024 is a day dedicated to showing, teaching, and inspiring others.
Come join UAB as we explore and celebrate the innovative applications of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology in the sciences. GIS plays a pivotal role in understanding complex relationships, modeling patterns, informing decisions and fostering innovation UAB understands that geospatial technology is fundamental for infrastructure, resource sustainability, and economic growth, all of which contribute to the welfare of the public. As such, we're dedicated to promoting GIS awareness, education, and training. Our goal is to leverage this evolving technology to its fullest potential, ensuring geographic information is open and accessible to all. In addition to the main GIS Day event on November 20th, UAB Facilities will be hosting a GIS Workshop on November 21st. This workshop is designed to equip UAB employees with the skills to effectively utilize ArcGIS Online. Participants will learn how to navigate the platform, search for and add data, create custom maps and more. Please see the detailed agendas and registration links below for both events.

ArcGIS for the Built Environment UAB Facilities
Thursday Nov. 21st
This workshop will help empower you with the ability to harness the power of GIS. You'll learn how to navigate the platform, discover and utilize existing maps and layers, leverage Esri's Living Atlas of the World, create and customize maps tailored to campus needs, and explore the field mapping capabilities of the Field Maps app. Please register in advance at the link provided below. Additionally, attendees will need to bring a laptop or tablet to participate in the hands-on exercises. Location: Facilities Training Center, 801C 6th Ave S, Birmingham 35233 Parking: Parking at this facility is limited. If parking is not available, the parking lot located across the street at Express 1 can be utilized, 608 8th St S, Birmingham 35233 Note: Coffee and snacks will be provided, but lunch will not be served.

Introduction to ArcGIS Online. This will involve how to login & reset your password, how navigate the ArcGIS Online Interface, locate specific groups, the map gallery as well as explaining what point, line and polygon features are

Explain what the different type of items are that are stored on ArcGIS Online. This includes layers, Instant Apps, Experiences, StoryMaps. Also explain to search and find specific itmes within the facilities ArcGIS Online Portal.

How to create and open a new map using MapViewer. Once opened, existing data can be loaded and basemaps can be changed using the Living Atlas. Will also explain how to symbolize layers to highlight categories and specific field entries.

Explain how to integrate and utilize the Field Maps application for field data collection and how the field data collection can be customized and viewed on ArcGIS Online
