How we measured climate impacts

The map below shows how climate change will likely affect county-level corn yields.

The Land of 10,000 Lakes is consistently in the top three producers of soybeans in the U.S., with production concentrated in its western and southern counties.

The Sunflower state is by far the top U.S. producer of winter wheat. Farmers plant it during the fall season to take advantage of the moisture and avoid the summer heat. Kansas has a highly variable climate, leading to large year-to-year swings in harvested area, yields and total production.

However, the lead time for transformative adaptation is much longer than for incremental adaptation, so planning for transformation must begin long before it is needed.
