Warning: The article, A New Guide by Architects Explains What Makes a Space "Instagrammable", uncovers the dangers within social media and how our information isn’t really as secure as it may seem. Everyday we log onto our apps whether that be Instagram, Facebook, Tiktok, Snapchat etc and we give out information unknowingly. A Lot of the time these apps track one another and sell our data to companies so that they can push out ads to us in order for them to gain profit and generate money. A LOT of our information is accessible to these big companies such as our location, address, device information, text and call logs, social interactions and so much more. Hearing this sounds crazy but these are things we essentially signed up for by making our social media accounts. Even though most problems have understandable solutions, the only way to really prevent this is to not be on social media at all. By not giving them something to get your data from, they won't be able to get it. Yet that may come at the expense of your own fun. There are some unreasonable ways to be untraceable on Instagram, but they don't really come with the perks of being yourself online. By making fake accounts with fake numbers and fake emails connected to it, you could remain anonymous, but there's really never a way for you to truly stay anonymous; there are just ways around it, such as VPNS. All in all social media has its perks but beware of your data and just how much information you're putting out there about yourself.
What I learned in this article is both disturbing and alarming. Knowing that social media can track things about myself and build a log of my presence online to push out their own ads is a little scary. Because yes they're saying that it's used for ads, but at the end of the day we don’t really know what else our information is used for and who holds all of this information about us. I use almost every social media platform, so each of those platforms hold my information. That's a scary thought to think about and it’s even more scary knowing that my information is used as a selling piece.
