Washington DC has one of the highest poverty rates in the nation at 18.6% of the population living in poverty.[1] With this socio-economic challenge facing the city, it is important to understand whether lower-income areas have access to food sources. In map 2, we have mapped the walkability analysis and created a join with census tract data on Median Household income. The census tracts that are below the poverty line and on the lower end of income in the city are represented in light yellow. There are 29 census tracts in the lower-income range, and most are clustered in ward 8 and ward 7 of the city. When comparing looking at these census tracts, many are not even within the 10 min walking distance buffer of a grocery store. It is becoming increasingly difficult for lower-income residents to afford cars, therefore being outside of ten-mins of walking distance to a grocery store in these areas can be defined a food desert.[2] In comparison, if we look at wards 1, 3, 4 where the majority of income is higher than 90,000, there are clusters of several grocery stores.
