Camera is from the Latin for “room” or “chamber” and obscura is from the Latin for “dark”. This device allowed for an early kind of projection, through a small hole into a darkened chamber. You can see how this works by making your own pinhole camera! Meanwhile, at this time in France, Louis Daguerre created the daguerreotype (see examples of this early photography below). The “daguerreotype camera” is generally thought of as the earliest version of what we now think of as a camera. This invention took off in places around the world, including America.

: generally speaking, this is an image made using a camera, by recording light and rendering that into a visible and permanent record. Traditionally, cameras recorded onto light sensitive material, such as chemically-treated analog film. Today, it is common to record digitally with digital cameras and even smartphones.
