Drawing a Scientist
Pippa is going to draw a scientist. Can you help her?
What does the scientist look like?
What are they wearing?
What tools does the scientist have to help in their work?
Draw your scientist.

Pippa and Dronie - the story
Look at the Book with your class
Who is the Author?
Who is the Illustrator?
Who is the book dedicated to?
What do the illustrations tell us about the story?
Is it Fiction or Non Fiction?
Read the book as a class.
3
Visit Jess Culley - Photographer - Gubbi Gubbi Country
You don't have to wear a lab coat and use a microscope.
Jess is a scientist because as a photographer she takes images of the world around her.
4
Which image is your favourite?
Jess taught Pippa and Dronie how to take cool drone photos.
Scroll through the photos above and choose your favourite. Tell a classmate why you like it.
5
Visiting Dr Vanessa - Marine Biologist - Eora Country Whale Snot! (click the arrow to go through photos and a video to learn more)
Where does Dr Vanessa fly her drone?
What is Dr Vanessa's drone doing?
Why is she collecting whale snot?
6
Visit Dr Karen - Geospatial Scientist - Port Curtis Coral Coast People
Mapping with Drones - Interview with Dr Karen. Click through the images to see Dr Karen and watch her interview.
7
Visiting Dr Renee- Landscape Ecologist Bininj/Mungguy Country
Kakadu National Park
Kakadu National Park is an enormous nature reserve in Australia’s Northern Territory. Dr Renee surveys plants and animals
8
Drone images of Kakadu
With your teacher, use GeoNadir to locate and zoom into Kakadu National Park and see if you can find some drone photos taken by Dr Renee and Dronie. How many can you find?
9
Visit Monica at Gurlibil Trail, Minyirr Buru Conservation Estate
Monica removes weeds in Yawuru country in Western Australia.
10
Visiting Monica - Country Manager - Yawuru Country
Why is Monica working with her fellow rangers to protect the area from weeds? Click through the images and watch the video about Monica and her work.
11
Yawuru Seasonal Calendar
Summer, Autumn, Winter, Spring...these are the seasons we have been taught. First Nations Peoples around Australia have seasons that they follow that are different to ours. Look at the following calendar that Monica uses to track the seasons. This helps her to understand how Yawuru country changes during the year.
13
Meet Dr Tamara King, Geologist
Pippa and Dronie helped Dr Tamara to find where an earthquake started. Go to the next slide to learn more.
14
Chasing earthquakes
The fault line was found in the south west corner of the Northern Territory in a place called Petermann.
Tamara enters her data into a database so that earthquakes can be tracked. You can see all of the data for Australia and the surrounding region by looking on the Geoscience Australia website https://earthquake s.ga.gov.au/
Follow the link and see how many earthquakes you can spot on the map.
1. Which was the deepest earthquake?
2. Which had the highest magnitude?
15
Design a Drone
Let's review all the Scientists you visited. Look around the map and remember who was at each location.
Who do you think had the most interesting job?
Remember Dr Karen's video where she showed us her drone? You can re-watch it here
Dronie wants you to design your own drone!
Choose how you'll use your drone:
1. Will you use it over land or sea?
2. Will you study animals, plants or geography?
3. Will you use the drone for research, data collection or conservation?
Design a drone that will help you complete your mission. Think of what your drone needs to do its job (rotors, camera, controller, motor, landing gear, battery, etc,).
Label your drawing.
What kind of scientist would use your drone?
Use different materials to build a model of you drone. Make sure you choose joining methods that will keep your drone strong!
16
Unplugged coding
Your teacher will show you a special mat of coral reef bommies. Using either the Dronie plush toy or by taking turns in being Dronie, you are going to work out exactly what steps you need to take to get Dronie to fly over the reef and photograph sections.
You will have some printed code blocks to use for instructions to follow. Step out your code and check if it's right. Don't worry if you make a mistake. You can always change it and try again. Can you walk the code all the way over the bommie to gather photo data?
Your teacher will explain more.
17
Dronie App
Your teacher will give you access to devices to fly a whole lot of drone missions using the Dronie App. If you're using a browser version you can access it here. Wait until your teacher says to click the link in the box below!
