My Major on the Map Assignment
Here is my major on the map. Major: Communications, concentrated in media production and criticism. Minor in photography.

The Invention of the digital camera
In 1975, Steven Sasson invented the first digital camera. A camera that was entirely electric and has no moving parts. Working for Kodak, initially the company was hesitant on embracing the newfound discovery as this would compete with the lucrative film technology. Yet, the influence of Sasson’s invention would be long lasting as this will revolutionize how photography is incorporated into the modern world.

The Inventor of the Color-Wheel TV
Guillermo Gonzalez Camarena created a new way of viewing television in 1940. Camarena developed a new technology that transmits images in variations of red, blue and green to depict the scenery in full color. Prior to the release of his patent, TV had been viewed in the monochromatic black and white frames. This innovation improved the efficiency of mass communication.

Aristotle
The early philosopher was one of the first to make an influential contribution to communication. Aristotle discussed the field of rhetoric of which the orator is the most important in the communication. Their duty is to identify the available means of persuasion. The speaker uses many forms of persuasion to convince the audience of their beliefs. Aristotle identifies the use of ethos, logos and pathos to strengthen your claim.

Alexander Popov
In 1885, Russian inventor Alexander Popov invented the first radio. A simple transmitter and receiver which worked using electromagnetic waves. The invention influences the development of the telegraph through communicating messages of morse code. Popov’s radio was the blueprint for further innovations to convey information to mass audiences.

Innovations to create an eco-friendly economy
Saudi Arabian Zain KSA has partnered with Indian Tata Communications to “fuel digital transformation journeys of enterprises and government organizations” in the region (Zawya). The project's goal is to remodel cities with smart technology to improve their efficiency. The partnership, region head Vaneet Mehta highlights the importance of the project stating “the strength of the reach of Zain KSA and cutting-edge infrastructure combined with our ecosystem of advanced technologies will strengthen the country’s shift to becoming a sustainable economy” (Zawya). The teamwork will create a solid solution which will improve city resources by implementing advanced tech. This is important to communication because their skills of diplomacy and communication are used to create a program that will benefit all parties.

Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela, activist and leader, was an influential figure in South Africa’s anti-apartheid protest. He held strong views against the separatist movement and was committed to fighting for justice. On April 20, 1964, Mandela gave a speech expressing his devotion to equality and the difficult road to suceed, he highlights that “it is an ideal I hope to live for and achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die” (The Washington Post). Mandela exhibits undying dedication to achieving equality and his speech calls for an uproar to the cause. The speech greatly communicated the systematic fault allowing inequality for Africans in South Africa. This exemplifies my study because it is an outstanding form of communication which uses many techniques to strengthen his argument.

Rise of AI technology in South Asia
In the modern age of technology, sharing information online is easier than ever, although comes with its own risks. The wide range of audiences online creates the obstacle of digital surveillance, being monitored on these public forums. Governments in South Asia, the Middle East, and Northern Africa have implemented Pegasus, software to monitor the activity of their people, and subsequently women have been targeted and are at a higher risk of blackmail or harassment. In 2021, Indian police announced the installation of emotion recognition software to spot a woman in distress. AI technologies surely can improve the safety of our communities, but the increased data and surveillance comes with its cost as well. This is important to my field of study because it involves the use of cameras and their potential hazards.

Mao Zedong
In the 1940s, the future leader of the Communist party of China opposed the idea of free speech. He believed that politics and intellect were to be kept separate, and the “party should control the creative process” (Sturgeon, 308). After the party’s rise to power in 1949, the Chinese people faced oppression when expressing their political views. Even in present times, they’re granted freedom of speech by the Chinese constitution, but often receive brutal punishment if they criticize their government. This is important to my field because it exhibits how the right to freedom of speech can be infringed on.

Cave Painting
A recent discovery has been made in Indonesia of what is believed to be the oldest form of cave art in the world. The art depicts a form of a figurative warty pig and is at least 45,000 years old. This form of communication was implemented in a time when verbal communication was limited. Cave painting is interesting because it exposes the evolution of human communication.

The Invention of Wi-Fi
In the late 1980s and early 90s, as the technology age quickly expanded, a multitude of experts worked to develop another innovation, Wi-fi. Wi-fi was initially developed in Australia by a group of scientists for the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO). This would change the world as people would be able to connect from anywhere. People are able to communicate easier than before, on small forms between one another and also large platforms such as the news.
