Land and Resources Management (LMSA)
Traditional Tipi Design
Presentation ground rules
- I can repeat my self and elaborate more, Just ask for it,
- people can feel free to interject, but no interrupt,
- Questions: I have an inch, please, don’t go to take a mile,
- I'm open for constructive feedback, so if you have any tips, feedback, comment , query, question, and you'd like to share , email me at "Hossam.y@siksikanation.com",
- All pictures, quotations or sourced material have been referenced using APA citation are represented at the end of this story map
The Start
Started my GIS position in May 2018,
Assigned to Operate the GIS section,

Analyze Spatial Data and translate it into thematic maps,
Build the SQL data base for ArcGIS,
Auto-cad municipal infrastructure mapping,
Work with various Departments to ensure their GIS needs,

preparation of GIS status report and highlighting issues requiring attention,
Compiling and organizing GIS data and update metadata definitions,
Support the LMSA dept staff for data collections,
Understand and Speak the Blackfoot culture and language.

My conclusion (first week)
There was no solid GIS data base,
Scattered Map resources and Geo DB,
the Metadata was not at defined,
No quality assurance in place,
No standard templates for Geo maps,
The Geo spatial data wasn't up to date,
Out of data ArcGIS System,
No Auto Cad software,
No Image analysis software,
No Data collection tool,
etc,......
What else !!!? three month later
Developed the reserve’s land use plan and defined Siksika nation’s local communities’ strategic requirements for the next 20 year,
LUP Map - Draft 04
Manage the Oil and Gas field data integrity using ESRI Applications (i.e. Collector) to visualize simultaneous site activities from different concessions, .....!!? Stopped
Improve the design safety margin, by utilizing ArcGIS Geo-spatial analysis to culminate in - engineering ground model and to select the optimal location for new residential communities
Predicted the potential flood zones/plains and prepared flood inundation risk maps by generating several hydraulic studies for the Bow river (i.e. reserve section) in steady and unsteady flow conditions, Bow river section; portion maps,
Created GIS guidelines and specifications for the LMSA department as part of the overall GIS method statement.
Another Tipi Design
Later that year (2018)
- Updated Land Use Plan Draft 03 Maps,
- Design and plan the reserve's Roundabouts and Roads,
- Update partially the historical territory inside the reserve,
- Determine the burned land boundaries (Fire 2017),
- Update the hydrology study for the Bow river,
- Started in developing GIS guidelines,
- Initiate 3 years GIS business plan,
- Organize Geosptial data and archiving it for future use,
- prepared pastures booklet as per the original maps,
Ceremonial Rings
In 2019 :
We Planned to:
Smoking Ceremony Symbol
- Update Land Use Plan Draft 04 Maps,
- Organize the Geo-spatial data as a continuing process,
- Update partially the historical Blackfoot territory,
- Create a GIS guidelines,
- Create LMSA interaction maps website, Stopped.
- Continue preparing the hydraulic river model,
- Maps for the potential flood Plain,
- Imagery and Data Collection using Airborne Imagery Capture,
What now :
- Completed Siksika Bow river hazardous study,
- Mapping and addressing Siksika (Agricultural permit holder),
- Provide some service for different Dept,
- Participating in the Indigenous Technical Working Group on Floodplain Mapping,
- Working with Wetland Co. towards field data collection by using ArcGIS Collector APP,
- Fire Zones and smart communities,
- Measuring vegetation index (NDVI & EVI),
- Migrating Geo-Data files and folders to ArcGIS pro,
- Study hydraulic conditions as part of the LUP,
- Creating ICS emergency map,
- Data central portal and talented data standardization,
LMSA Running and Future Projects $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Drone ...!!
Measuring the vegetation (NDVI and EVI) for agriculture needs,
Measuring vegetation changes for the last 10 years using (NDVI and EVI).
Imagery Analysis
Using Digital Elevations Models to represent the 3D terrain surface.
Measuring vegetation changes for the last 10 years using (NDVI and EVI).
Image Processing using linear Algebra
Emergency Management
Applications (part of Siksika EMC plan)
Drone Deploy: Aerial Site Intelligence in Real Time
Services Contracts
A new service contract for Randy’s Road Project – pretender offer to “Blackfoot Construction Contracting – SRDL Business Group”, No Feedback??
Capture historical data
Update the reserve landscape images with high resolution, especially for traditional sites.
Flood Prediction and Early warning
Building resilient to natural disaster is one of the most pressing challenges for achieving sustainable development in the region
Fire Zones and smart communities
Most communities face some wildfire risk; many face a high to extreme risk. Proactive measures taken by community members and leaders can reduce the risk.
Study slope vs soil classification
Building foundations need to be on stable and strong soils for the stability of the residential buildings
