As a sub-region of the Columbian Department of Antioquia, Bajo Cauca is located approximately 175 miles North of Medellin.

A few of the local rivers that run into Bajo Cauca are the Cauca & Nechi Rivers. They are just a few of the many Colombian rivers that empty into the Caribbean Sea.

It's clear that these communities rely greatly on the surrounding rivers, and they play such a vital part of their everyday life.

Columbia's Illegal Mining Has Become a Nuisance & Quite a Difficult Issue for the Government to Resolve.
The mining has an environmental impact as well as a physical impact on the members of the community that are forced into this type of work with women particularly impacted. As you can see by the following picture below, a woman is operating a heavy piece of equipment without any protective gear on, exposed to the elements, and without proper supervision.
Here is one example of a mining operation that was shut down by the government.
