Margaretsville began with lands granted in the 1780s to Dr. J. Haliburton. A refugee Loyalist from Rhode Island, he was granted lands in the Wilmot Township area. Later, his son Brenton Haliburton received a grant of Land in Wilmot Township that bordered the Bay of Fundy shore. The village of Margaretsville, named after his wife, sits on what was once a part of that Haliburton grant.
