75% bicycle intensity maps

How intensity maps can support cities to achieve UN Road Safety Performance Target 4

UN Target 4

The UN Road Safety Performance Target 4 is part of a set of global road safety goals outlined by the United Nations to help countries improve road safety and reduce traffic-related injuries and fatalities.

Specifically, Target 4 focuses on improving existing road infrastructure and addressing the safety of all road users.

Six years after the launch of the performance targets, it is still unclear how to establish the 75% of travel parameter. Identifying all the travel happening in a city demands massive data on flows and routes and many initiatives focused only in motor vehicles.

The approach shown in this website uses bicycle intensity maps to showcase what percentage of cities street/road/path networks carry 75% of bicyclist travel. The work forms part of the iRAP partnerships to generate accelerated and intelligente RAP data as part of the global  AiRAP  initiative.

The Model

The ‘Don Quixote’ model of  DOK data & road safety  estimates bicycle intensities using demographic, street network and elevation data in an extensive agent-based simulation.

Using globally available open data, regional configurations, people profiles and bicycle specific navigation algorithms, the model can provide estimates on bicycle intensities for most urban areas around the world.

As shown on this website, the simulation model can be helpful for road safety experts to get an overview of bicycle usage in their areas of interest.

Are you interested in obtaining bicycle intensities for your city?

The intensity maps can also be generated for pedestrians.

The Results

*The results shown on this website are derived from a simulation model and should therefore be regarded as estimates.
