City-As-School Goes to Paris 2024
13 students and 4 staff members will visit the Nouvelle Chances de Blanc Mesnil school in Paris

Why? An international experience should be available to all high school students regardless of socioeconomic status, goals and/or interests. Participating in an exchange with our partners in the International Network of Productive Education (INEPs) offers City-As-School students the opportunity to experience new perspectives; learn how to navigate different cultures and collaborate with peers and educators in a diversity of settings and languages. These skills are crucial for success in any career and will prepare students to face challenges, compete in the job market and enable students to feel confident and engaged in participating and being leaders in our local and global communities.
City-As-School is founded on the principles of experiential learning through real-world community collaboration. Establishing an exchange program within INEPs is a natural extension of our work and more important than ever to support our students in developing the ability to face increasingly challenging global problems in their futures.
Who? 13 students will register for the experience cycle 2. All students who have shown a commitment to the program will be eligible to participate. Students must participate productively and complete assignments to demonstrate their commitment and ability to be responsible during the exchange.
How? Students will participate in a preparatory 8-week cycle from November 2023-January 2024. Utilizing our experiential, internship model, students will intern for 2 days/week at a French cultural institutions. These will be in restaurants, bakeries, schools, etc. They will spend one day/week studying French (class using Rosetta Stone) and engaging in project-based learning and field trips to build their understanding of the French language and culture and to establish a collaboration with the students at Nouvelle Chances Blanc Mesnil (NCBM).
In Paris, City-As-School students will participate in the NCBM internships and workshops with their Parisian peers while also experiencing Parisian cultural activities as a group (both CAS Students and NCBM students and staff).
Where? Students will participate in activities and tours with their peers at Nouvelle Chances Blanc Mesnil. They will stay at this hotel .
We will stay in the center of Paris and travel to the school in Blanc-Mesnil by Metro
How to Help:
*Please support the trip by donating to this GoFundM e*.
The total cost of the trip including airfare, hotel, meals, transportation and insurance is $23,00 for the group. We raised $14,000 to support our students in joining the program. We are happy that we were able to provide the funds to insure that every student was able to participate regardless of financial resources.
Here
We have been so fortunate to work with two teaching artists, Alexis Raskin and Lu Chihlan from Here on Earth who have taught and supported students to creatively explore film techniques to tell their stories. Students have learned about camera angles, technical knowledge, genres, stop-motion animation, interview techniques and more to create short films to share with their Parisan peers and to capture the preparation and experience of traveling to Paris to meet students from Nouvelle Chances Blanc Mesnil. Here are some of their works.
We have been busy getting to know each other and creating media to share with our peers in Paris. Here are some poems about the Hudson River that we posted on Dear Body of Water.
Our students are learning video techniques. They worked together to make 1 minute video poems.
Students interviewed each other using questions from the students in Paris.
A Day in the Life at Internship
We experimented with Stop Motion Animation
Students Final Project: Students worked independently and together to create two short videos describing NYC to the students in Paris. They will share these films the first day together.
