Project Background

The Mile High Flood District (MHFD), in partnership with Jefferson County, has engaged Olsson Associates to provide a Major Drainageway Planning Study and Flood Hazard Area Delineation (FHAD) for SJCD (N), SJCD (S) North Tributary and DFA 6100.5 and within the MHFD, Jefferson County, and other adjacent community boundaries.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the existing and future floodplain delineation, assess stream erosion and deposition, and develop a series of alternatives and plans that will maintain the ecological health of the reach and also address flooding and erosion concerns.  This project will:

  • Provide updated hydrologic analysis (peak runoff estimates for a variety of rainfall events)
  • Assess drainage conditions within the drainage basin
  • Develop alternate drainageway planning concepts to mitigate flood damages
  • Provide stabilized alternatives for SJCD (N) and SJCD (S) North Tributary
  • Address environmental and public safety concerns
  • Prepare a preliminary design of an alternative selected by the sponsors and the MHFD
  • Define the water surface profile and flood boundaries for the 2, 5, 10, 25, 50, and 100, and 500-year return periods

The project sponsors are:

  • Mile High Flood District (MHFD)
  • Jefferson County
  • Olsson

Schedule

There are four phases to this MDP and FHAD study:

  • Phase 1 – Baseline Hydrology – Complete
  • Phase 2 – Flood Hazard Area Delineation –
  • Phase 3 – Alternatives Analysis –
  • Phase 4 – Conceptual Design –

Approximate schedules for Phases 3 and 4 will be posted when the dates become available.  The schedules will be updated following completion of each phase of the project.

A meeting with the public to share the results of the Alternatives Analysis will be scheduled after Phase 3 is completed. A notice will be mailed that includes meeting topics and logistics following the completion of Phase 3.
