ASUCI Districting Testimony

Irvine City Council Districting 2023-2024

The Associated Students of UC Irvine would like to identify communities of interest for the upcoming Irvine city council districting process. While students live in many parts of Irvine and across Orange County, ASUCI would like to request that certain communities containing large numbers of students be kept together in a single city council district.

ASUCI previously identified a UC Irvine community of interest including the University campus and the adjacent University Town Center neighborhood (Resolution 57-03). For city council redistricting, the ASUCI Senate approved Resolution 58-69 in order to request:

  • That the UC Irvine Community of Interest remain undivided in a single district
  • That the Parkwest Apartment Complex and Toscana and Villa Siena apartment complexes be recognized as communities of interest because they contain large numbers of off-campus students.
  • That the UC Irvine Community of Interest be paired with the Parkwest Community of Interest and Toscana and Villa Siena Community of Interest
  • That UC Irvine NOT be paired with any portions of the Turtle Rock, Turtle Ridge or Shady Canyon neighborhoods, which are socio-economically dissimilar from the UC Irvine community and have fundamentally different interests and needs
  • That the council district containing UC Irvine not cross Culver Drive so that it can serve as a widely recognizable district boundary
