The Sinking of the Solomon Islands

The 21st century's first instance of "sinking islands" where five islands have already been swallowed by the rising sea.

One of the ramifications of global climate rise reveals itself as the Pacific's Solomon Island archipelago loses five of its islands to the sea. Over the past seventy years, these islands once used for fishing by natives have ceased to exist above the oceans surface.

The Solomon Islands Archipelago is located in the southwestern Pacific ocean

With the most recent of the five islands being lost in 2011, this is a very present threat and with the global climate continuing to climb, and sea levels continuing to rise, more islands are going to be lost.

The rising sea level is affecting more than just fishing in the Solomon islands. With the encroaching coast line making its way inward on the other islands, people are being forced to relocate.
