Energy Fellows
A Brief on my Brief Experience
'I first heard about the Energy Fellows in my high school’s extracurricular Google classroom, where it was listed as an internship opportunity. After completing the application twice (it was lost in the system the first time), I was glad to earn a place among the other fellows. And while some of my deliverables remained, well, undelivered, the readings and work I was able to do really opened my mind and gave me better insight into how energy and the environment are interconnected. I knew the importance of conserving water, but not that water and energy were closely related systems, and how small habits like showering at a different time or drying clothes at night could actually lessen the stress on essential infrastructure. But my most valuable learning came from ArcGIS – I wish I was more interested in computer systems and software/coding – I had a field day with all the publicly-available mapped data. After getting acquainted with ArcGIS (and several members of the TEC team!) I was exposed to the field of work that involves graphing data to look for trends and correlations. When I’m designing electrical transmission zones, I’ll remember that my blueprints have social impacts (don’t cut through that suburb!), and that I can play a major role in preserving this planet for future fellows (and engineers) to come.'
