NATO's 75th Anniversary: A Country Wide Celebration

2024 Recap

In 2024, the NATO Association of Canada celebrated 75 years of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and showcased Canada’s role and contributions to the Alliance from sea to sea by highlighting and collaborating on events with diplomatic missions, educational, community, and military organisations across the country. This year, we hosted, collaborated on, and undertook speaking engagements totaling 53 events (18 held online) with over 4500 attendees collectively. In addition to our events, NATO Association’s editorial team published 81 articles which accumulated 177,891 reads over the course of 2024. Scroll down to discover our 2024 country-wide calendar!

The NATO Association strives to educate and engage Canadians about NATO and NATO’s goal of peace, prosperity and security and we are proud to have spread this message even further this year as we hosted and collaborated on events across 7 provinces including Ontario, Saskatchewan, Winnipeg, Quebec, British Columbia, Alberta, and Prince Edward Islands having engaged with organisations in Saskatchewan, Winnipeg, and P.E.I. for the first time ever. Some of our collaborative event highlights include panels with CIC-Saskatoon on 2% defence spending, Women in International Security Canada on Women Leaders in Business and Security in Ottawa, and on NATO 101 with CIC-Edmonton, the Loyal Edmonton Regiment Military Museum and the South Alberta Light Horse Regiment Foundation.

Throughout the year, the NATO Association hosted educational, cultural, and networking with dignitaries, professors, military, and youth groups. In 2024, we organized a diverse array of events that included a Reception of Honour for NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, a panel discussion with Kosovo’s Deputy Minister Gashi on NATO’s role in Kosovo, the “Music of NATO” concert, the NATO Beer for Peace Festival, as well as panels focusing on Afghanistan, Operation UNIFIER, and the 2024 Washington Summit. Besides events, our team has been working on a number of exciting projects including our  Security in Community Online Course ,  Diplomatic Speaker Series ,  Podcast Series , NATO 101 Country-Wide Museum Displays, Professional Development Sessions, National Flag Contest, and weekly  articles  published on our website.

The NATO Association team attended a number of high-level events including the Halifax Security Forum, NATO Parliamentary Assembly in Montreal, 70th General Assembly of the Atlantic Treaty Association in Brussels, the Montreal International Security Summit, Canadian Arctic Conference in Toronto, Model UN 2024 Conference in Toronto, NATO Edge 24 tech & business conference in Tampa, receptions by Swedish, Croatian, and Ukrainian Embassies in Ottawa among others.

Throughout our country-wide celebration of NATO’s 75th Anniversary, the NATO Association had the pleasure of working with NATO HQ, Government of Canada including Global Affairs Canada, the Department of National Defence, Embassies in Ottawa, YATA-Canada, the Ontario Regiment RCAC Museum, Canadian International Council (CIC) Saskatoon, Canada Aviation and Space Museum, BC Regiment Association, Cobalt Bunker Military Museum, Musée du 12e Régiment blindé du Canada, Seacow Head Lighthouse Inc., CIC-Edmonton, the Loyal Edmonton Regiment Military Museum, the South Alberta Light Horse Regiment Foundation, Women in International Security Canada, Thompson Rivers University, Canadian Association for the Advancement of Netherlandic Studies, University of Manitoba, Diefenbunker, CIC-Calgary, Mathias Corvinus Collegium, NAADSN, CDA Institute, TEDx UofT Scarborough, Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy, and others.

As we reflect on the remarkable milestones achieved throughout 2024, we extend our deepest gratitude to our staff, directors, and partners who made these successes possible. Your unwavering support, hard work, and collaboration enabled the NATO Association of Canada to engage Canadians from coast to coast and foster meaningful dialogues.

Looking Towards 2025

Our team is looking forward to continuing promoting peace, prosperity, and security through knowledge and understanding of the importance of NATO in 2025. This year our focus will center on the current urgent shifting global environment and the historical milestones that have shaped global national commitments to peace, justice, and human rights.

In 2025, we will continue to highlight the importance of supporting victory and peace in Ukraine and other parts of the world against the backdrop of the 80th Anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day on May 8, 1945. This pivotal moment marked the end of World War II in Europe, a hard-won victory that laid the foundation for international collaboration and rebuilding of a peaceful, rules-based order world. Our ongoing efforts to champion Ukraine’s sovereignty and right to peace underscore the enduring relevance of those same ideals.

Building on this theme of global cooperation, we will remind Canadians of why our support for the rules-based international order is so important by spotlighting the 80th Anniversary of the signing of the United Nations Charter on June 26, 1945. This historic document enshrined a collective vision for maintaining peace and advancing human rights worldwide, echoing the lessons learned from the devastating war. We will also celebrate Canada’s 65th Anniversary of the Canadian Bill of Rights receiving royal assent on August 10, 1960.

Together, these anniversaries underscore the importance of NATO’s mission in safeguarding the values of peace, security, and democracy—both globally and within Canada.Through events, projects, and collaborations, we will honour these milestones as interconnected pillars of a global system built on shared responsibility and common values.

One of our goals for 2025 is to spread our message to even more Canadians across the country through collaborating on in-person and online events and sharing external events and initiatives across our network and social media. If your organization is interested in collaborating with us in 2025, please contact our Chief of Staff, Bogdana Torbina, at  bogdana.torbina@natoassociation.ca .

President & CEO of the NATO Association of Canada, Robert Baines, participated in a discussion “The Alliance of the Future” part of the NAADSN Ideas Series “NATO at 75,” a virtual series dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

The importance of the collective defence alliance has been revived since Russia’s full invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Canada was an original signatory of the Treaty in 1949, making significant contributions and commitments in Korea, the Balkans, Afghanistan, and Latvia. Canada, and North America’s, role in multilateral transatlantic security has been reinvigorated amidst the current international security environment marked by the return of strategic competition.

Apr 4: Toronto's Celebration of NATO's 75th Anniversary

The NATO Association of Canada hosted NATO 75th anniversary reception in Toronto at the incredible Royal Canadian Military Institute. We were grateful to host Hon. David Collenette, former Defence Minister 1993-1996, for an opening address on the deep connections between Canada and the transatlantic alliance.

MP Julie Dzerowicz spoke on her involvement in the NATO Parliamentary Assembly and the benchmark of “2% [of GDP] as not the ceiling but as the floor” of military spending.

Hon. Erin O’Toole brought forth Mark Twain’s quote that “history never repeats itself, but it does often rhyme.” He made note of Canada’s dignitary position as one of the initial founding members of NATO. He emphasized the Canadian push to build institutions that uphold rule of law as per NATO’s Article 2, often referred to as the Canadian Article.

Hon. Art Eggleton shared a profound appreciation for NATO as a former Defence Minister from 1997-2002. He shared his experience as the Canadian delegate present during the first and only ever enactment of Article 5 on September 12, 2001: “The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all…”

We were honoured to be joined by such accomplished and notable figures in Canadian politics. Thank you to our host NAOC President and CEO Robert Baines and to NAOC Chair Emeritus Kathryn E Langley Hope. 📸: @nickwons

May 27: Operation UNIFIER: Canadian Training and Equipping Efforts for Ukraine

We had the pleasure of hosting LCol Chris Boileau last Monday, at the beautiful Canadian Forces College campus. LCol Boileauukraine Commanding Officer of The Queen’s Own Rifles and has previously served as the Task Force Commander of Operation UNIFIER (2022-2023), the CAF’s military training and capacity building mission in support of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

We learnt from LCol Boileau’s “on the ground” experience in supporting this critical NATO mission to aid the Ukrainian frontlines. His team revolutionized military education and was faced with the herculean task of compressing months-long training on complex systems and procedures into just 4 or less weeks.

Thank you to the Canadian Forces College Foundation for hosting our event, to our Events Team Lead Apostolos Zezos for moderating the discussion, to our Hon. Chair Emerita of the NATO Association of Canada Kathryn E. Langley Hope for closing remarks, and to everyone who came out to support this amazing event!

Through its work and activities, the Assembly facilitates parliamentary awareness and understanding of the key issues affecting the security of the Euro-Atlantic area, and supports national parliamentary oversight over defence and security. Crucially, it helps to strengthen the transatlantic relationship and the values which underpin the Alliance. The Assembly is institutionally separate from NATO, but serves as an essential link between NATO and the parliaments of the NATO nations.
