Denver Neighborhoods

Over the last decade, Denver was experiencing significant population growth.

In the years since 2010, the number of people living in Denver has increased by approximately 19 percent, or 112,000 people, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

In 2023, the median household income in Denver was $94,157.

Denver’s median household income has grown 109 percent since 2010.

This is dramatic growth in median household income compared the nation with 55 percent growth and Colorado at 72 percent growth.

Over the past decade, Denver has experienced a significant shift in the economic landscape, marked by a notable increase in the proportion of residents not living in poverty. As more individuals and families have risen above the federal poverty level, the percentage of people eligible for services based on income has steadily decreased.

This trend reflects a broader economic growth in the region, driven by factors such as job creation, wage growth, and a diversification of industries that have attracted a more affluent population. While this progress is a positive indicator of economic vitality and improved living standards for many, it presents unique challenges for human services agencies, whose services are traditionally aimed at supporting those living at or below the federal poverty level.

The decline in the population falling under this income threshold means fewer residents qualify for essential services such as public assistance, child care subsidies, and housing support. As a result, our organization may need to reconsider how we define eligibility, ensuring that we continue to serve the most vulnerable populations while addressing the changing needs of Denver’s evolving economic landscape.

This shift also calls for a reexamination of programmatic goals and resource allocation to ensure we remain aligned with our mission. The economic progress in Denver presents both opportunities and challenges in continuing to deliver impactful services to those most in need, even as the demographics of poverty shift.
