Welcome to the Wilman Wadandi Highway
The Wilman Wadandi Highway (Bunbury Outer Ring Road Project) is a 27-kilometre four-lane, high-standard road linking Forrest Highway to Bussell Highway. This is the biggest transport infrastructure project ever undertaken in the South West, delivering a safe and efficient road network for freight, tourists and locals alike.

Djilba - Melissa Riley, Local Noongar Artist
Melissa’s artwork, ‘Djilba’ meaning spring, welcomes visitors to the South West, as they transition to the Wilman Wadandi Highway from the Forrest Highway. This artwork uses the vibrant colours of the first spring and the appearance of the sky in the evenings at Koombana Bay. It also incorporates local peppermint trees and banksias. “My colours, elements and story are from my family’s history that will never be forgotten.” Melissa said. “Djilba is about memorable, lifelong song lines and stories told through my family’s song lines.”

Urban Design
The design of the Raymond Road bridge abutment was completed by the South West Gateway Alliance in consultation with the Aboriginal Heritage Advisory Group (AHAG) and the Urban Design and Landscaping Focus Group. The design is inspired by the shell of the endangered South West Long Necked Turtle. This design uses a colour palette of earth/clay tones that link to the nearby Collie River and the surrounding environment. Surrounding screen and noise walls feature the same pattern and colour palette.

Urban Design
The design for the South Western Highway (north) bridge abutment was completed by the South West Gateway Alliance in consultation with the Aboriginal Heritage Advisory Group (AHAG) and the Urban Design and Landscaping Focus Group. The design is inspired by the Noongar season of Birak. Birak is known as the ‘first summer,’ where the rains start to ease and the warmth of the sun returns. The design draws on ‘karl’ meaning fire and geology, which will come to life using a burnt orange and brown colour palette.

The ‘Mega-Bridge’ – Andrew Frazer, Local Artist
Andrew’s design will be painted on the columns that support the 382 metre-long bridge. Andrew is a local artist and his artwork is an interpretation of the natural forms found in the nearby Ferguson River and surrounding wetlands, with the pattern mimicking the movement of light bouncing off the water’s surface. The colour palette features gentle blue and warm red tones, with yellow highlights, representing the Bunuru season. “I have created a strong visual identity…which connects place with purpose, integrated abstracted natural forms with a bold palette to create an immersive experience for drivers travelling in both directions on Boyanup-Picton Road and Golding Crescent,” Andrew said. Surrounding screen and noise walls feature a complementary pattern and colour palette.

Karrack Designs, Local Noongar Artists
Featuring flowing bands of green and blue, Dellas and Korrine Bennell’s artwork depicts the local vegetation and flowing river systems. The rich colour palette represents the Noongar season of Djeran when the hot weather finishes and the cooler breeze begins to arrive. The artwork also features the Koomool, or Western Ringtail Possum. These recessed silhouettes are painted peacock blue to represent the nocturnal nature of these creatures. “The Koomool is an amazing animal and brings honour to Noongar culture,” said Dellas and Korrine. “They were a source of food, and their fur was used for clothing to keep warm during the winter. Our design process was to select an animal and plant that was not only significant to Wadandi Country, but also to us as Wadandi artists.”

Ian Mutch, Local Artist
Ian’s artwork represents the local native species of Banksia found in the Gelorup region. The artwork conveys growth within the environment and thriving communities. The portrayal of various Banksia species represents the diversity in nature and in society. A series of four moulds were designed to create the natural rhythm along the bridge abutments, featuring floating leaves, bees and flowers. Deep blue tones of the Makuru season are contrasted with colourful pops of pink and gold, depicting the seasonal blooms that provide important nectar. “I have a strong connection to these plans. To me they evoke the memory and feeling of being down south. I hope that the art brightens the development and the daily commute. Most of all, I hope the artwork highlights and celebrates the natural beauty of the Gelorup area,” said Ian.

Path networks on Wilman Wadandi Highway
The Wilman Wadandi Highway (Bunbury Outer Ring Road Project) will feature 17 kilometres of path network, including a principal shared path (PSP) to enhance cycling infrastructure in the South West. A PSP is a high-quality, three metre wide shared path for walking or riding. The new PSP is a key component of the project and promotes active transport and provides a safe, and accessible route for cyclists and pedestrians along the alignment. The path network includes:
- PSP from Willinge Drive to Lillydale Road along Wilman Wadandi Highway;
- Shared Path network along Willinge Drive between Wilman Wadandi Highway and South Western Highway;
- PSP along the new section of Lillydale Road to Bussell Highway;
- Shared path at-grade crossing of Wilman Wadandi Highway at Harris Road; and
- Paths are also provided at connecting roads and cyclist facilities at roundabouts to allow safe movement of cyclists across Wilman Wadandi Highway.
These connections were chosen as they were highly rated by the project’s Active Transport Advisory Group, which includes stakeholders from cyclist groups and local government authorities. They also connect to the existing shared path network and cycling routes. This infrastructure has been designed to align with the 2050 Bunbury Wellington Cycling Strategy.

Safety and efficiency features on Wilman Wadandi Highway
The Wilman Wadandi Highway (Bunbury Outer Ring Road Project) will soon feature new safety and efficiency enhancements.
The Discovery Road intersection will have a Side Road Activated System (SRAS) to manage highway speeds and safe local road access and crossings. This system encourages safer driver behaviour by increasing driver awareness of side road traffic and turning traffic at the intersection and reducing the highway speed when triggered. Additionally, at the highway intersections of Willinge Drive and South Western Highway (south), the roundabouts will have traffic signals on some approaches that will operate in periods of high demand and help to manage traffic flow.
The Wilman Wadandi Highway has been designed to prioritise safety, with an emphasis on proactive measures like these to encourage safer driving. Features like the SRAS and signalised roundabouts provide direct, real-time management of traffic flow, speed and align to the Austroads ‘Safe System’ approach to road safety. This approach focuses on creating a road environment that minimises the risks around collisions and provides a safer journey for all road users.
As with all intelligent transport systems, there is a comprehensive testing and commissioning phase, and these features will become operational once this final phase is complete, concurrent with the opening of the main alignment later this year.
