Progress

The Rice Mine Road/SR-297 side of the project is nearly complete, with only a few minor items of work remaining and the final layer of asphalt, which will be added later this year as the project concludes. The contractor has shifted his focus to the McWright’s Ferry Road side of the project. The paving of the new McWright’s Ferry Road was extended north near Oak Glen, and progress continued on the conduit and pole bases for lighting and security upgrades along the multi-use path. Recently, curb and gutter and concrete driveways were installed between Oak Glen and Sierra Drive along McWright’s Ferry Road. The McWright’s Spur tie in front of Waterfall Lane is ready for asphalt, and sod installation has continued north on the project. Work was completed in the past two weeks to address settlement in the existing sanitary sewer trench along McWright's Ferry Road.

Upcoming impacts

  • Traffic from McWright’s Spur south of, and including, Waterfall Lane will begin using the McWright’s Spur tie next week after it is paved.
  • Continued lane restrictions and shifts will occur on McWright’s Ferry Road into the summer while work is performed in and around travel lanes. Initial work will be in the segment between Sierra Drive and Oak Glen while later phases of work will impact the segment between Bluegrass Pkwy and New Watermelon Rd.
  • A detour of Bluegrass Pkwy traffic through Sierra Dr will be needed in late Spring to complete the new Bluegrass Pkwy.

Progress

Paving is complete on the right turn lanes at the Rice Mine Road and SR-297 (Bryant Bridge) intersection. Additional paving is in process to complete the access in front of Coral Industries. The contractor has focused on constructing the McWright’s Ferry Road tie-in outside existing travel lanes, and on additional widening of existing McWright’s Ferry Road between Oak Glen and Sierra Drive. Lighting for the pedestrian path is complete, and additional lighting and security infrastructure is being placed on McWright’s Ferry Road and Rice Mine Road.

Upcoming impacts

  • A temporary detour was implemented at the McWright’s Ferry Road tie-in to allow the contractor to work in the existing travel lanes. Traffic will use a portion of the new road to access McWright’s Ferry Road south of Oak Glen. This detour began on February 27 and is expected to last approximately 3 weeks.
  • Intermittent lane closures will cause minor traffic impacts as work continues on McWright’s Ferry Road between Waterfall Lane and Oak Glen Drive.

February 1, 2025

Progress

Paving the final lanes on Rice Mine Road and SR-297 (Bryant Bridge) is expected to be complete this month. Storm drainage and curb and gutter installation are near completion on the Rice Mine Spur Road in front of Coral Industries, and sidewalk has been placed from the SR-297 intersection to the north tie-in on Rice Mine Road. The new section of McWright’s Ferry Road is taking shape with the paving of the pedestrian path, installation of pedestrian lighting, sod placement, and final touches on the bridges. Work has resumed on the tie-in area near Oak Glen Drive, including storm drain installation and roadway grading.

Upcoming impacts

  • Minor impacts to traffic are expected during right lane paving at the Rice Mine Road and SR-297 intersection. This work will allow additional lanes to be opened, improving traffic flow.
  • Intermittent lane closures will cause minor traffic impacts as work continues on McWright’s Ferry Road between Waterfall Lane and Oak Glen Drive.

January 1, 2025

Progress

Last month, the contractor completed the new intersection and road tie-ins at SR-297 (Bryant Bridge) and Rice Mine Road, and traffic transitioned to the new intersection. This marked a major milestone for the project. Now that traffic has moved off of the existing Rice Mine Road, the contractor continues constructing the remaining travel lanes and side streets in front of TTL, Coral Industries, and the Randall Reilly buildings. Waterline and storm drain work is being completed on Rice Mine Road, and the contractor has made significant progress on the installation of curb & gutter, sidewalks, and driveways in the area. Decorative railing on the pedestrian bridge and painting on the roadway bridge is complete. On the McWright’s Ferry Road side, the contractor has begun final grading of ditches and slopes.  

Upcoming impacts

  • Minor impacts to traffic are expected during paving operations on Rice Mine and SR-297.  This work will allow additional lanes to be opened, improving traffic flow.
  • Storm drain crossings on McWright’s Ferry Road near Oak Glen will have a minor traffic impact.

Progress

The current focus of the project is to complete the roadway tie-ins at Rice Mine Road and SR-297 (Bryant Bridge). The Rice Mine Road north tie-in in front of Randall Reilly is complete, and the SR-297 tie-in is completed and preliminarily paved. The new traffic signal at SR-297 and Rice Mine Road is operational, and the contractor has finished the shoulders and slopes in this area with topsoil and grass. The closure of Rice Mine Road that began Friday, November 22 completes the south Rice Mine Road tie-in in front of Plott Construction. Traffic now utilizes the new intersection and traffic signal.

  • This month, the contractor will begin removal and rebuilding of the west half of Rice Mine Road in front of Randall Reilly. Minor impacts to traffic are expected.

Rice Mine Road Closure: November 22-27

Rice Mine Road will be closed south of the SR-297 (Bryant Bridge) intersection from Friday, November 22 at 8:30 a.m. until Wednesday, November 27 at 5 p.m. (dates subject to change pending weather). Traffic will detour via Northridge Road and Ol’ Colony Road. This is expected to cause traffic delays.

November 1, 2024 

Progress

Considerable progress has been made on the asphalt paving across various sections of the project. On the new segment of McWright’s Ferry Road, asphalt binder layers were placed on the lanes and shoulders, extending the paved portion of the roadway further north. Paving was also done on the widened part of Rice Mine Road, and on SR-297, where binder layers were placed from the new intersection to the bridge.  These recently paved areas will allow traffic to utilize the new SR-297 and Rice Mine Road intersection, marking a major milestone for the project. Additionally, decorative railing has been installed on the pedestrian bridge, and the concrete finishing and steel painting on the roadway bridge are underway.

Upcoming impacts

  • Rice Mine Road lane shifts will remain in place until the new road is tied in and traffic can be redirected through the new intersection.  
  • The left lane of the SR-297 south diversion will remain closed.
  • A temporary road closure of Rice Mine Road will be conducted in November to complete a storm drain crossing.
  • A traffic pattern change will be implemented on Rice Mine Road to place traffic on the new roadway and intersection around Thanksgiving.

Progress

Significant advancements have been made on the new section of the road between North River and Oak Glen, including grading and stone base placement over approximately 3,500 feet of roadway. Paving for this section is anticipated to begin in October. On Rice Mine Road, work has begun to construct a portion of the tie-in in front of Randall Reilly and Coral Industries. At the SR-297 (Bryant Bridge) intersection, signal heads have been installed and the traffic signal is nearing completion. All sanitary sewer work on the project should be complete in early October. Bridge end slabs and barrier rail have been completed on the roadway bridge, and decorative railing is currently being installed on the pedestrian bridge.

September 1, 2024 

Progress

The McWright’s Ferry Road project is past the halfway point. Several project milestones were achieved this month, including the completion of both the roadway and pedestrian bridge decks. This leaves only bridge end slabs and barrier rail on the roadway bridge, and decorative railing on the pedestrian bridge to be completed. Another milestone met this month is the completion of earthwork, grading, and paving of the new McWright’s Ferry Road from SR-297 (Bryant Bridge) to North River. Paving was also done on McWright’s Ferry Road northeast of the bridge. Conduit and pole bases for the pedestrian path lighting and security are underway northeast of the bridge, and work continues on the SR-297/McWright’s Ferry Road traffic signal. On Rice Mine Road, the contractor completed remaining storm drainage on the east side and has begun the 12” watermain relocation on the west side.

Upcoming impacts

  • Traffic will continue using the SR-297 diversions as work in the new SR-297/McWright’s Ferry Road intersection progresses. The last phases of SR-297 intersection work will require closure of the left lane of the south diversion (traveling towards Bryant Bridge) before traffic utilizes the new intersection.
  • Utility and road work on Rice Mine Road will require lane closures until traffic can utilize the new intersection. Several phases of lane closures or shifts will be put into place as the contractor prepares for traffic to be placed on the new alignment.  
  • Roadway work on the sides of existing McWright’s Ferry Road will necessitate intermittent lane closures in the fall.

Progress

Progress continues on the new portion of McWright’s Ferry Road with the placement of topsoil, grass, and stone base and pavement. Sanitary sewer installation on McWright’s Ferry Road has been completed from near North River to New Watermelon Road including the recently completed line across McWright’s Ferry Road to Oak Chase. At the SR-297 (Bryant Bridge) intersection, old road has been removed, fill has been placed, and traffic signal construction has begun. On Rice Mine Road, the extension of storm drain and waterline relocation in front of Coral Industries has begun. Several spans of bridge decks have been poured, and bridge construction is expected to be complete in September.

Progress

Primary areas of material haul-off have been completed, and only minor grading work remains on the project. Grading work has begun to widen McWright’s Ferry Road, and fill material is visible on the east side of McWright’s in preparation for new curb and gutter. Sanitary sewer installation has progressed from south of Oak Glen to north of Bluegrass Pkwy and will be completed in the next few weeks. On SR-297 (Bryant Bridge), traffic signal foundations and conduit are being placed and the contractor will begin grading the new intersection in between the diversion roads. Bridge deck pours will continue this month and the installation of lighting systems on McWright’s moving towards the bridge has begun. Through the summer, intermittent road and lane closures on McWright’s Ferry Road are expected to continue, and traffic will remain on the SR-297 diversions.

Progress

All of the blasting for this project has been completed, and material haul-off is progressing on schedule. Waterlines were installed in April, and the lines on McWright’s Ferry Road have been switched over to the new feeds. Sanitary sewer line installation is in progress as of early June.  On the SR-297 (Bryant Bridge) side of the project, traffic diversions are in place at the intersection of SR-297 and McWright’s Ferry Road.  This will allow intersection work to happen with minimal impacts to traffic. Bridge construction continues to progress. A portion of the concrete pouring on the pedestrian bridge is complete, and the road bridge will be poured this month. Through the summer, intermittent road and lane closures on McWright’s Ferry Road are expected to continue, and traffic will remain on the SR-297 diversions.

Progress

Grading is almost complete! Only three areas of earthwork involving blasting and mass hauling remain. In April, the focus shifted to complete installation of around 3,800 feet of waterline on McWright’s Ferry Road. An additional crew was assigned to this effort, taking the completion time from the projection of a couple of months down to just a couple of weeks. The sanitary sewer line is in place from near the bridge to Oak Glen and will continue north on McWright’s Ferry Road after waterline installation is complete. Progress on the bridges continues as the substructure of both bridges is complete, and deck pans are being installed. The new alignment of Rice Mine Road south of SR-297 (Bryant Bridge) will be paved soon. Residents and the travelling public on McWright’s Ferry Road, SR-297, and Rice Mine Road should expect traffic impacts from short term lane closures, lane shifts, and new traffic patterns as the project progresses into existing travel lanes.

April 1, 2024 

Progress

Drilling, blasting, and excavation continue to be the primary focus of the project. The contractor is nearing the end of the large-scale earthmoving, and the majority of the rock has been moved. The roadway is on grade between SR-297 (Bryant Bridge) and North River. Grading and earthwork south of SR-297 are progressing as well. The new roadway is near grade, the slopes have been graded and grass has been planted. Between North River and Oak Glen, the contractor has a few more weeks of excavation and haul off remaining to connect the graded sections of the new McWright’s Ferry Road. Segments of the new sanitary sewer line will be connected in the next two weeks.  All girders are set and substructure of both the roadway and pedestrian bridge over North River are complete, and the contractor expects to begin deck construction soon. As the project continues, work operations will be moving towards existing portions of McWright’s Ferry Road and SR-297, which will necessitate occasional lane closures.

  • As part of the SR-297/Rice Mine intersection improvements, a sequence of lane closures will be implemented on SR-297 beginning 4/8/24 and extending through the summer

Progress

Work continues on each side of SR-297 (Bryant Bridge). A significant percent of the earthwork leading to North River is complete, and the right of way is beginning to take shape between SR-297 and Rice Mine Road. East of North River, preparations are underway for final grading between North River and Oak Glen. All girders on both bridges have been set, and the substructure of the roadway bridge is underway. Sanitary sewer installation continues on the new portion of the roadway.

Progress

Work has begun south of SR-297 (Bryant Bridge) and continues between SR-297 and North River. A substantial portion of the cut and fill is complete on the new portion of the road between North River and Oak Glen. Construction is in process of the roadway bridge over North River, and the truss span of the pedestrian bridge over North River has been set. Over 1,600 feet of new sanitary sewer lines have been installed.

The contractor has moved 60% of the required material on the project, installed girders on 3 of the 7 spans for the vehicle bridge, and laid asphalt on around 2000 feet of new roadway.

Project Overview

The City of Tuscaloosa is growing. With an expanding population of over 110,000 citizens, it has become increasingly important to lay the groundwork that will not only accommodate the present but also sustain the anticipated growth of our community. McWright's Ferry Road stands as a prime example of our commitment to building the foundation for tomorrow. This comprehensive project aims to enhance emergency response capabilities, create safer and reduced commutes and unlock new avenues for future expansion.

Recently initiated with support from the Tuscaloosa County Road Improvement Commission (TCRIC), this extension, linking Rice Mine Road to New Watermelon Road over North River, is a significant step forward for our city. It includes a pedestrian bridge and a shared-use path, fostering future connectivity to the Northern Riverwalk.

Are there specific hours when construction will take place?

There are a few time requirements that the contractor must follow for specific items of work but will generally work 7am to 5pm during the week and possibly some Saturdays and Sundays. Occasionally, night-time work may be performed during non-peak travel hours to reduce impact to traffic.

The project is necessary to reduce commute times, improve quality of life and create faster police, fire and ambulance response times.

Will this project affect my commute into Tuscaloosa? Commute to schools?

As with any roadway construction project, there will be traffic delays. If you travel on McWrights Ferry Road, New Watermelon Rd, Rice Mine Road, or SR-297, you can expect delays.

What provisions are in place for Tuscaloosa emergency services during this time?

Emergency Access must be maintained during construction.  Whenever a detour is planned, the contractor informs the City of the closure, and the City notifies 911 of the detour to ensure proper provisions for emergency services.

Will this prevent access or parking to any local businesses?

The contractor is required to maintain access to businesses and residents throughout the duration of the project. If there is work that needs to be performed on your driveway, the city's representative and the contractor will coordinate this with you.
