LAUSD Public School: Central Story Map

LOW-INCOME LAUSD SCHOOLS

Problems/Struggles

  •  Inequalities in education begin from the funding of the government. Low income schools are more likely to receive less funding than an average private or rich school in the hills.
  • According to the  Los Angeles Times,  most public’s schools get paid depending on the location of the school and would mainly under pay students in low income communities leaving them with less resources.

Resources

  • A resource that we found that is very helpful for Low-Income Students is the  Prep For Prep Organization , helps in developing leaders who reflect the diverse society. They provide scholarships and programs to ensure success for minorities.

Research Findings

  •  Rogers and Nicole Mirra. UCLA postdoctoral scholars,  surveyed a demographically representative sample of 800 California teachers during the 2013-14 school year showed that teachers in high poverty schools were more likely to report problems that would happen at school, creating less teaching time, lack of access to technology and libraries, classroom lock downs, insufficient substitutes teachers and interruptions to the class.
  • “Three to four times more students at high poverty schools than at low poverty schools struggled with economic and social stressors, including unstable housing, hunger and lack of medical and dental care”.

HIGH-INCOME SCHOOLS

Advantages/Resources

  • Enriched Academic Opportunities - extracurricular activities, AP courses, IB programs.
  • Smaller Classes
  • Parental Involvement
  • Dedicated Teachers
  • Secure Environment
  • Ample Resources

Higher Education

  • Many private schools prepare kids for college and beyond compared to public schools who focus on the core classes throughout their education experience.
  • A recent recap of high school graduates showed private school students scoring 3.1 points higher on the ACT test.
  • When a student feels the support of their teachers and peers, or learns confidence from positive interactions in the class, that student is more determined to pursue continuing education and approach college with admiration. Private schools offer tutoring and college prep for students, providing help during a time that is often confusing and stressful.

How We Interpret our 2nd Map

Analyzing our second map we notice the high amount of resources and services that are widely available and needed for low-income neighborhoods and public/private schools in the lower area. Compare to if we go higher and middle/upper class area on the Central Map, there are more isolated schools that don't need as much of the programs and services.

Theses 2 graphs display many factors that play into LAUSD and Private School Education.

How Community Affects School Succession

  • Low-income neighborhoods can vary in the kinds of support they give their neighbors compared to enriched neighborhoods can exterminate the harmful effects of economic disadvantage on student achievement.
  • Children who lived in disadvantaged communities, were more likely to interact with dangerous peers than were children in advantaged communities. Affiliating with dangerous peers had a negative effect on children's academic progress, even when those children came from nurturing, supportive families.
  • The resources available in a community determine the extent to which it can support families. High-income communities are more exposed to beneficial programs for the families in that area.
  • Example such as health and recreational facilities help promote a better lifestyle. Poor communities, on the other hand, are more likely to suffer the negative consequences due to the lac of poor resources. The effects of poverty are felt both physically and emotionally, and the results are destructive personal choices, sicknesses and increased crime.

RESOLVE/SOLUTION: MOVING FORWARD

  • Pathways and guidance should be considered like a map for students that have trouble in succeeding in their education
  • Teachers need to make sure that children are developing emotional, physical, and social skills before the child learns core classes.
  •  Applying a new way of scoring school performance
  • Dedicate scholarships to majority of students and provide proper resources in order to succeed academically.
  • Assist more emotionally support with personal advisement to students that are mentally struggling.
  • Incorporate parent involvement programs to help build a relationship with academics and personal life.
