Current Management Encouraging woodland regeneration and development of other habitats. Current focus is on the ancient Ardvar Woodlands on the north side of Quinag, which have been suffering from high numbers of deer are preventing young trees from growing

Corrieshalloch Gorge NNR

The best example of a slot gorge in Britain designated for its geomorphology and upland birch wood. The gorge has a woodland edge retaining a broad range of native tree species, that are home to a rich assemblage of bryophyte and lichens.Removal of remove exotic trees, rhododendron and Japanese knotweed from the gorge. Slattadale

Current Management Extensive restoration of Plantations on Ancient Woodland including experiements in direct seeding of native tree species.

The lower slopes of Beinn Eighe and the islands of Loch Maree are home to remnants of ancient Caledonian pinewood.

Current Management Maintaining and enhancing the existing woodland using seed from local provenance and encouraging natural regeneration.

Glen Torridon Partnership Project

Partnership project led by Woodland Trust Scotland

Glen Torridon is one of the most evocative landscapes in the world. This area of over 28,000 hectares containsa mosaic of rich habitats, including rainforest.

Current Mangagement The management objectives for rainforest in this ASR Landscape-scale Focus Project include controlling invasive, non-native species, particularly Rhododendron ponticum and significantly increasing native woodland coverage, particularly along riparian zones and improve connectivity between existing rainforest.

Achnashellach

This forest includes Achnashellach Caledonian pinewood and extensive floodplain alderwood as well as significant areas of Plantations on Ancient Woodland.

Current Mangagement Restoration of ancient woodland planted with exotic conifers is underway here and there are long-term plans to convert the whole forest (1,500 hectares) to native woodland.

Balmacara

The birch, oak, hazel and pine woodlands of this estate are full of characteristic rainforest bryophytes and the rare Norwegian specklebelly and abundant old man’s beard lichen.

Balmacara

Part of the Coille Mhor oakwood SSSI. FLS' designated area is mostly Plantations on Ancient Woodland beside the NTS oakwood, which is now regenerating with native woodland. FLS also manage an extensive area of upland birchwood (also part of the Coille Mhor SSSI), similarly with PAWS under restoration. 

Current Mangagement Extensive restoration of Plantations on Ancient Woodland including various halo thinning treatments around rich remnants.

Strathaird, Skye

The woodlands of Strathaird are a mixture of ancient coastal birch woods, replanted native woodlands and natural regeneration; they support an impressive number of invertebrate species.

Current Mangagement Gradually converting blocks of Sitka spruce into native broadleaf woodland including hazel, aspen and ash.

Uig

Woodland Trust Scotland

Mature woodland along the shore and two steep-sided ravines, which together make up the most extensive area of broadleaved woodland in north Skye.

Current Mangagement Fencing to keep out sheep; non native conifer regeneration removal.

A remote and mountainous landscape, rich in bryophytes and wildlife, with planted native oaks, hazel, birch and rowan reconnecting the scattered remnants of ancient and semi-ancient woodland.

Current Mangagement Planting native tree species and managing deer to encourage natural regeneration of birch, oak, hazel, rowan, Scots pine and other native tree species.

Loch Arkaig Landscape Restoration Partnership

A fragment of Caledonian pinewood which lies in the rainforest zone, including spectacular ‘granny’ pine trees and rare bryophytes (mosses and liverworts).

Current Mangagement This ASR Landscape-scale Focus Project is focusing on transitional and peatland edge woodland restoration, invasive species management, native species translocations, and continued support to develop the community tree nursery and deer larder/venison production unit.

An ancient upland woodland with a diverse range of native trees including Scots pine, sessile oak, hazel and birch. Typical rainforest bryophyte flora is well represented in the woodlands of Glen Nevis.

Glenhurich & Callop, Loch Shiel

Oak and pinewood remnants amongst extensive non-native forest on the steep eastern slopes above Loch Shiel. Includes Loch Shiel SAC woods as well as Ardgour pinewoods SAC. 

Current Mangagement Extensive restoration of Plantations on Ancient Woodland  around ancient semi-natural woodland remnants and plans to expand native woodland beyond this area. Strategic deer control

Sunart

Forestry and Land Scotland

Part of the Sunart Special Area of Conservation. There are many records of rare lichens in these oak woodlands. The site encompasses Ariundle National Nature Reserve (managed by Nature Scot).

Current Mangagement Long period of rainforest restoration, initially through the Sunart Oakwoods Initiative and in partnership with North of Sunart Woodland Owners Group. Remaining areas of Plantations on Ancient Woodland to be restored and ongoing follow-up rhododendron control, and removing non-native regeneration.

Glenborrodale

Ancient oak woodland - part of the wider Loch Sunart Atlantic Oak Woodlands SSSI and Sunart Special Area of Conservation.

Current Mangagement Encouraging tree regeneration by managing browsing impact of deer, as well as controlling rhododendron. Small scale cutting of bracken to allow the food plants of the rare pearl-bordered fritillary butterfly to thrive.

North-east Mull

A collection of fragmented patches of rainforest and PAWS, including the Aros Cliffs SSSI, which includes lichen-rich hazelwoods and hazelgloves fungus. There is also an extensive area of eared/grey willow and hazel colonising  onto a mosaic of open habitats.  

Current Mangagement Creation of new areas of hazelwood to reduce fragmentation. Extensive rhododendron control and restoration of Plantations on Ancient Woodland

Saving Morvern's Rainforest

Partnership project led by RSPB Scotland

The Morvern peninsula is home to two areas of ancient oak woodland that have been designated as Special Areas of Conservation due to their extraordinary variety of plants, lichens and fungi.

Current Mangagement This is an ASR Landscape-scale Focus Project, which aims to restore and enhance areas of rainforest via large-scale rhododendron eradication; ensuring sustainable grazing levels and expanding areas of existing native woodland.

Glen Creran

Ancient oak woodland which supports a rich community of mosses and lichens including 23 globally vulnerable or near-threatened species. 

Current Mangagement This landscape-scale project, which ran until 2021, involved Rhododendron ponticum clearance, plus training and equipment for the local community to enable them to take ownership of the issue in Glen Creran. The project also introduced the wider community and local school children to the delights of the glen through a programme of education and guided walks.

Current Mangagement Maintaining and improving the mosaic of woodland and glades. Glades are kept open by controlling spread of bracken and rhododendron.

Ardtrilleachan

A long chain of oak and birchwoods running along the remote north western edge of Loch Etive, part of the Loch Etive woods SAC. There is also a tiny  pinewood remnant. Has as a wealth of lichens and bryophytes. 

Current Mangagement Extensive restoration of Plantations on Ancient Woodland is beginning in the adjoining plantation and should allow increased deer control as well as significant native woodland expansion.

Glen Orchy

Two pinewood remnants, one of which is a SSSI, and Cattnish oakwood. There are some important montane willow scrub areas.

Current Mangagement Expansion of the two pinewood areas has been going on for some time. New native woodlands have been planted on slopes on the eastern side of the glen. Restoration of Plantations on Ancient Woodland and scoping for further native woodland expansion high up above existing forest.

Inversnaid

RSPB and Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park Authority

Oak woodland rising steeply from the east shore of Loch Lomond, with open moorland above. Includes the RSPBNature Reserve, Craig Royston and Pollochro Woods SSSI; part of  The Great Trossachs Forest National Nature Reserve.

Current Mangagement A large rhododendron contol project was completed in 2022, and is currently being maintained as rhododendron-free.

Loch Lomond Rainforest Project

Partnership project led by Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park Authority

The native woodland within the National Park includes some of the finest examples of temperate rainforest habitat in Europe, with over 1800ha designated as Special Areas of Conservation.

Current Mangagement This ASR Landscape-scale Focus Project will enable woodland expansion around the shores of Loch Lomond through restructuring of key existing productive woodland especially Plantation on Ancient woodland sites, native woodland expansion and the sustainable control of invasive non native species and herbivores.

East Loch Lomond

A significant part of the Loch Lomond Woods SAC. Mostly oakwoods. Co-operative working with neighbours through the Loch Lomond and National Park Authority.

Current Mangagement Extensive PAWS restoration and rhododendron control. Conversion of non-PAWS plantation areas to native woodland. Removal of non-native regeneration from PAWS under restoration. One very difficult area to the north is in the latter stages of planning for extensive PAWS restoration (very steep ground underneath Ben Lomond).

Knapdale

Part of the Taynish and Knapdale Woods Special Area of Conservation, these woodlands are a patchwork of oakwoods and plantations on ancient woodlands, including the Faery Isles SSSI and the Barnlussgan hazelwoods.

Current Mangagement Extensive restoration of Plantations on Ancient Woodland (PAWS) and control of rhododendron and non-native regeneration. Some managed cattle grazing in the past and plans to look at this again in a different part of Knapdale. Creation of a new area of hazelwood. Ongoing deer control. Lichen monitoring to assess impacts of beaver.

South Assynt

Partnership project led by Woodland Trust

The Glencanisp and Drumrunie estates contain an important mosaic of habitats, including around 400ha of rainforest. Other habitats include montane and riparian woodland, heath and open moorland, peat bogs, lochs, streams and rock. Current Mangagement This relatively new ASR Landscape-scale Focus Project will protect, restore and expand a range of habitats, particularly woodland, including temperate rainforest remnants. Initial work is involving establishing baseline data.

Knapdale Restoration Project

A Partnership project led by Argyll Coast and Countryside Trust

A large, consolidated landscape containing many woodland SSSIs, Special Area of Conservation sites, and other areas of ancient native and semi-natural woodland amongst a large area of production forest land.

Current Mangagement Working with landowners and communities to develop and deliver rainforest, this ASR Landscape-scale Focus Project is starting with the control of Rhododendron ponticum. The next phase will involve the promotion of appropriate deer control.

West Cowal Habitat Restoration Project

Partnership project led by Argyll Coast and Countryside Trust

Bounded by Loch Striven and Loch Fyne, the project area includes the peninsulas of Kilfinan and Colintraive, which encapsulate the Kyles of Bute National Scenic Area. The project area includes a mosaic of natural habitats including temperate rainforest.

Current Mangagement Working with landowners, this ASR Landscape-scale Focus Project will develop a cooperative shared approch to deer management, invasive non-native species control and woodland creation.
