The Scramble for Africa
European nations began to create colonies in Africa by using there natural resources, spreading European ideas and there religions.

Three Reasons for colonizing Africa
- Natural resources
- Spread of European ideas to open new markets
- Spread of religion (Christianity)
Resources to feed factories

In the 1800's the industrial revolution took place. This was the cause of factories being built. These factories were run on coal, iron and water and getting that stuff was hard and it runs out fast. Africa had a lot of these resources and that is when they get brought introduced to the Industrial revolution.
Spread European culture

The social classes in the 1800's were the cause of racism and social darwinism. The tensions between each class and race grew as the Europeans used the African people so slaves to build and work for them. The tensions also grew between classes because the upper classes would wear fancy clothes and do nothing while the lower classes worked to get paid very little.
Spread Christianity

Christianity in the 1800's was a big deal and like every other religion they wanted to spread it. They sent missionaries over to Africa to spread and teach the religion. The African people took the advice and teachings ad converted to Christianity.
