This photograph, thought to date from the early 1880s, shows lower Brougham Street with Devon Street passing across the foreground. The building on the left corner is the Masonic Hotel, the original part of which was built in 1853, replacing an earlier hotel known as Cob House. The hotel closed in 1884 after which the Bank of New Zealand built premises on the site. The name of the hotel can be seen in the street lamp. The large building on the opposite corner is the drapery business of W.R. King and Son.
