Introduction

Goal

This Story Map is a working space serving to:

  • map coastal resilience actions in the Atlantic Ocean Region, and
  • assess the types of tools which could serve to strengthen collaboration the Atlantic Ocean coastal resilience research and innovation community.

Timeliness

A more formal definition of coastal resilience "is the capacity of the socioeconomic and natural systems in the coastal environment to cope with disturbances, induced by factors such as sea level rise, extreme events and human impacts, by adapting whilst maintaining their essential functions.” ( Source ).

The timeliness of addressing coastal resilience is visible in the daily news around the world. Here are a news items and images that capture the some of the challenges facing coastal communities around the Atlantic Ocean.

Atlantic of Actions

Many actions to understand and strengthen coastal resilience around the Atlantic Ocean already exist.

OKEANO is engaged in an extensive mapping exercise of projects, actions or other initiatives addressing coastal resilience in the Atlantic Ocean area. The following  Survey  supports this aim, and all collected information is displayed in the  Map Tour  below.

Survey

Please complete the linked survey if the map above does not include an Atlantic coastal resilience related project, action or other initiative that you know of. Please note that no personal information is collected as part of this mapping.

Pilot Sites

The following is a small overview of sites identified in various research projects or otherwise to conduct small-scale preliminary studies to evaluate feasibility, duration, cost, adverse events, and improve upon efforts to promote coastal resilience. The term Pilot Sites is used here to encompass also living labs, demonstration sites, and other similar geographically focused initiatives.

If you know of or work at a Pilot Site that is not yet included, feel welcome to fill out the survey below.

Online Hubs

Scientists, governments, local communities, private companies, NGOs and many more actors are busy shaping our understanding and having an impact on coastal resilience. The mapping above has identified well over 100 existing research projects, field actions, community initiatives, etc. promoting stronger coastal resilience in the Atlantic Ocean region (not all are shown in the Dashboard above).

To present the data and information collected by these efforts, a number of online tools have been developed that offer specific services and resources for interested experts and citizens.

The following is an overview of some types of tools used to promote collaboration and knowledge sharing concerning coastal resilience.

Toolboxes

Online Toolboxes or toolkits provide usable information and options for action, including web-applications or smartphone apps. These are ideally grounded on evidence-based science and usually intended for individuals involved in planning and management of coastal and marine challenges. The following is a small sample of toolboxes either already established or soon to be released for coastal resilience.
