Domestic Waste Water Treatment Systems Grant for High Status Objective Catchment Areas

In order to help with the attainment of water quality objectives under the River Basin Management Plan 2018-2021, a grant scheme is available to assist householders with the cost of works to upgrade their domestic waste water treatment systems.  This is provided for under the Housing (Domestic Wastewater Treatment Systems Grant for High Status Objective Catchment Areas) Regulations 2023 (S.I. No. 564 of 2023) and further details can be found  here .

This story map will assist potential applicants to identify if their house is located in a High Status Objective Catchment Area as referenced in the  River Basin Management Plan 2018-2021 .

A house located in a High Status Objective Catchment Area may be eligible for financial assistance towards the remediation, repair, upgrading or replacement of a domestic wastewater treatment system, under the Rural Water Programme.

The map below shows the areas around the country that have been identified as High Status Objective Catchment Areas. A potential applicant can identify if they may be eligible for financial assistance in respect of their domestic wastewater treatment system by searching the map using their Eircode.

What is a High Status Objective Catchment Area?

The  Water Framework Directive  provides ecological status classifications for rivers, lakes, transitional waters and coastal waters, that is:

  • High status,
  • Good status,
  • Moderate status,
  • Poor status, or
  • Bad status

The High Status Objective Catchment Areas include the water bodies within the High Status Areas that have been identified as “at risk” or “in review” under the River Basin Management Plan 2018-2021.

What is the High Status Objective Catchment Area grant scheme?

The High Status Objective Catchment Area grant scheme provides for financial assistance towards the remediation, repair, upgrade or replacement of a domestic wastewater treatment system, for houses that meet certain criteria in accordance with the areas outlined in the River Basin Management Plan 2018-2021,  and in accordance with the Terms and Conditions of the scheme (see below).

The scheme is administered by the local authorities on behalf of the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.

What is the level of financial assistance available? 

The level of grant aid available is determined on the basis of 85% of the approved cost of the works subject to a maximum of €12,000. The minimum expenditure, on eligible works, required to process the application is €750.
