Connecting Woodside
Phase 2 - St George's Road/Charing Cross
Connecting Woodside
-
Connecting Woodside is an ambitious area based project which forms a key component in Glasgow's proposed City Network. The project complements many surrounding projects and acts as 'the missing piece of the jigsaw' helping to connect Woodside/Woodlands to Sauchiehall Street, the Forth and Clyde Canal and regeneration work at Port Dundas and Sighthill.
At the heart of the Connecting Woodside project is an aim to work with the community to improve streets and public spaces for walking, wheeling and cycling, rebalancing streets to reduce the dominance of road traffic.
The Connecting Woodside project has been funded by the Scottish Government through Sustrans Scotland's Places for Everyone programme and contributions from Glasgow City Council's active travel budget.
Objectives:
- Increasing modal shift.
- Creating safer, convenient, seamless and segregated routes.
- Connecting to and through major short trip generators.
- Improving the quality of the urban realm, delivering high quality designs and integrating green infrastructure, whilst meeting the needs and aspirations of communities.
- Improving accessibility for all, including making substantial improvements to the environment for people on foot

St George's Road/Charing Cross
Following on from the completion of the Charing Cross works in 2024, Glasgow City Council in conjunction with Transport Scotland and Sustrans are now working on St Georges Road. These works will see the creation of new public realm spaces, street space enhancements, tree planting and segregated active travel facilities.
A contractor for the works has been appointed, MacLay Civil engineering Ltd. Construction will commence on the 17th of March, with an estimated duration of 48 weeks.
Phase 2 of the works located at the southwest end of St George’s Road will tie in with the recently completed works at Charing Cross. The construction phase will then proceed north eastwards on St George’s Road and conclude at the junction with Garscube Road.
We are implementing a number of changes to improve the environment for pedestrians, cyclists, local residents and businesses.
The works will include:
- Upgraded traffic signals and the introduction of new signalised crossing points.
- Enhanced footways and the introduction of natural stone paving.
- Upgraded street lighting from Maryhill Road to Garscube Road.
- New area of soft landscaping and street trees.
- Installation of a 2-way cycle lane on St George's Road from Charing Cross to Garscube Road.
- Relocating the access and egress point on Clarendon Place from St George's Road Maryhill Road.
- Closure of Glenfarg Street to through traffic.
This is to increase road safety, improve public space, increase the number of cyclists, and reduce sustainable transport journey times.
