Shifting Cultivation
Shifting cultivation can be found throughout Southeast Asia, Africa, and the rainforests of South America. This form of agriculture involves moving from one cultivable area to another. This form of agriculture is more common in poorer regions because they can't afford alternatives to burning fields, like fertilizer. This photo was taken in Manmao, Arunachal Pradesh, India.
Subsistence Farming
Subsistence agriculture is especially common in Sub-Saharan Africa and other less developed regions. This intensive form of agriculture is used on a small scale, and produces just enough crops to support a family. It can be seen in the form of small farms. Ranching
Ranching is similar to pastoral nomadism, but it's commercial, and not subsistence. It can be found in western parts of the United States, the high plains of South America, and Central Australia. This is an image of an 1898 roundup in the town of Cimarron, Colorado.

Aquaculture
Most aquaculture farms are found in Asia, but they can be found throughout the world. This intensive form of agriculture involves the farming of fish, mollusks, crustaceans, aquatic plants, etc. It can be very harmful to the ocean since pesticides and growth hormones can spread easily in the water. This image was taken of the Anhai Bay in China, where oysters are farmed.
Rice Production
The most common areas to find rice production are East, South, and Southeast Asia. These areas usually have intensive subsistence farms. Rice is grown in swampy areas where fields can be soaked in water year round. This picture was taken of the Pana Banaue Rice Terraces in Luzon, Philippines.
Corn Production
Corn production is most common in the United States, specifically the heartland region. Corn production is considered a type of intensive subsistence farming. The United States provides over 70% of the world market's corn. This image was taken of a corn field near Royal, Illinois.
Wheat Production
Wheat production is considered an intensive subsistence form of agriculture. Wheat is an extremely versatile crop and is grown around the world. It is most common in China, India, and Russia. This image of sheaved and stocked wheat was taken in Pennsylvania, 1943.
