US62 Mulberry Improvement Project

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) Design Project #4-80200

Project Updates

Update 1/23/25

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet would like to thank those that took the time to attend the Public Information Meeting held at the Elizabethtown Tourism Building on August 13, 2024, or visited our website to complete a questionnaire.  Options were presented for the intersections at Main Street, Ring Road, and I-65.  With feedback from stakeholders and the public, the project team analyzed the costs, benefits, and impacts of each option. The following selections were chosen for final design:

  • Main Street – Right-in / Right-out. Restricts left turns from Main Street to US 62.
  • Ring Road – Dual Lane Roundabout.
  • I-65 – Dog Bone Roundabout Interchange which features a roundabout at each ramp.

The project also includes plans for constructing roundabouts at French Street, Commerce Drive and Howell Drive. It will create a new route for Buffalo Creek Drive to connect to US 62 at Commerce Drive. With the proposed improvements, certain turning movements will be restricted at Pawnee Drive, existing Buffalo Creek Drive, and Executive Drive.

To view the entire corridor and all the planned improvements, refer to the map below, or  click here to download a detailed PDF .

This project will now move into the final design phase which includes finalizing the environmental analysis.  Depending on available funding, the purchase of Right of Way could begin as early as late 2025.

Project History

As part of the  2023 US62 Corridor Study , the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) studied safety and mobility needs along US62 Mulberry in Elizabethtown from Brooks Street to Howell Drive, including the I-65 Exit 94 interchange.  Multiple concepts were considered for the corridor, intersections, and the I-65 interchange.  Each were shared with local officials, stakeholders, and the public to gather community perspectives.  A typical design of the corridor was chosen, as well as roundabouts at French Street and Howell Drive.  Intersection options at Ring Road and at I-65 were identified to take forward for further consideration.

With completion of the study, the project began preliminary engineering design work in 2024. KYTC contracted with the engineering firm Lochmueller Group to perform the next phase of creating more detailed alternates. Fieldworkers have initiated surveys in the area, collecting necessary data for design of the road and assessment of associated environmental impacts. This includes land surveying and geophysical surveying, along with geotechnical and environmental data collection. This information has informed preliminary engineering design alternatives which will be presented at the upcoming Public Meeting detailed below. Meeting materials will be posted on this page after the meeting. Be sure to check back for more!

Public Information Meeting

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) hosted a public meeting on August 13, 2024, at Elizabethtown Tourism & Convention Bureau to present design alternatives developed to address congestion and safety within the US62 interstate corridor by improving intersections as well as providing better accommodation for pedestrians. These alternatives were developed after feedback from the US62 Corridor Study that wrapped up in July 2023.

If you couldn't attend the meeting, here’s your chance! Click below to enter our virtual meeting. You can interact with our 3D map of the recommended improvements, view displays and watch educational videos that explain some of the unique intersection designs.

In addition to our virtual meeting, we have the meeting materials below:

Survey responses were collected through September 13, 2024.

The meeting record will be made available for review and copying through an Open Records Request. All Open Records Requests must be submitted to the KYTC, Office of Legal Services, TCOB, 200 Mero Street, Frankfort, KY 40622.

What's Next?

The project will advance through the design and environmental processes. These activities are anticipated to be complete by the end of this year. The right-of-way and utility phases are expected to begin in early 2025. A future construction date has not been determined at this time. Check back for more project updates.
