West Africa hosts among the world's largest populations of both loggerheads and green turtles. The Cape Verde archipelago is the main breeding site for loggerheads in the East Atlantic, and the third largest in the world, with over 15,000 nests per year. The Bijagós archipelago in Guinea-Bissau, with about 7,000–29,000 nests per year, is the most important breading site for green turtles in West Africa, while the Banc d’Arguin National Park in Mauritania is the most important foraging site for green turtles.
