The UWSP Archives has collaborated with the UWSP GIS Center to bring census records to life through an interactive map experience.

Census records are hard to read. From the illegible scrawl of the census-taker, to misspellings of names and changing addresses, it takes lots of time and effort to get information out of a census record.
The map that follow this paragraph allow user engagement. Using the computer mouse you can enlarge the map, zoom-in or out of the map, click on data points, and learn more about your community.

Use the plus/minus symbols in the upper left corner to zoom in and out. Otherwise, the scroll wheel on your mouse works too.

Click the house symbol to return to the default view.

Use the search bar to find your ancestors or a specific address. You can search by last name, by address (try 2200 Dixon St), or by occupation.

Under the search bar, are two filter icons. The left one allows you to toggle the map by birthplace, organized by the most common birthplaces for each census year. The filter on the right allows you to toggle the map by occupation or profession. The filters are organized by layer -- make sure the layer you want to view is selected.

You can also create a custom filter by clicking this icon at the lower right of the filter lists.

Toggle between the layers by selecting the layers symbol in the upper right corner.
Choose the appropriate layers for your research from the layer list.
Each resident is marked by a flag icon, indicating the country of birth, and a yellow point for the head of household. In many cases, there are multiple people living at a single residence.

At the top of the pop-up, the arrow allows the user to flip between individuals and find out more information.
In the summer of 2024, the UWSP Archives and GIS Center refined the web application to completely visualize the census records for Stevens Point from 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930, and 1940. The web application gives genealogists, local historians, homeowners, and educators a valuable research tool.
