Water Crisis , Cape Town
Potential zone mapping for groundwater using GIS and Remote Sensing, within the Cape Town region.
Project Aim
The aim of this project is to eliminate and combat issues surrounding the Sustainable Development Goal 6 which is , 'Clean Water and Sanitation'. South Africa faces major water stress issues , especially in the past 10 years and we expect these issues to remain as well as exacerbate if nothing is done. In the past 10 years there has been a gradual decline in the population percentage that have access to safe and managed drinking water. The link below represents more statistics based on South Africa's current situation (Stats SA).The region of Cape Town has experienced severe drought over the past decade and still continues to remain under severe water stress. This is why this project focuses on important and relevant issues regarding SDGs
This SDG is not only relevant to South Africa but is a major problem worldwide. There are 2.2 billion people worldwide that lack managed drinking water. The availability of water also has a direct influence on sanitation , health and disease control (UN, 2019).
The Purpose of the project
Targets within SDG 6
The Purpose of the project is do determine suitable sites within the region of Cape Town where potential ground water zones can be mapped using remote sensing as well as GIS Data. This allows us to tackle the specific targets laid out by the United Nations which help achieve Goal 6.
Methods
The Method used to determine the most appropriate sites for ground water sites was Mulitple-Critera decision analysis. This is a highly effective method which utilizes multiple criterial such as cost , land temperature , Topographic Wetness index , Drainage density, precipitation and land use cover. The analysis gives each variable a weighting and then we are able to decide on the most effective areas ( Weistroffer , 2016).This is a brilliant tool used throughout major site location projects.
