Unraveling the impact of French colonialism on Indochina

A Venture Grant completed by Mustafa Sameen and MD Rahmoon Shamdeed Kabir

Project Overview

Our project compared the post-colonial effects on the aforementioned countries and found out how it was different from that of Thailand. Primary methodologies include compiling an online travel diary with vlogs, pictures, and personal experiences. Furthermore, we mapped our journey and recorded the most efficient and budget-friendly travel guide for future travelers. Alongside, we wrote a daily blog focusing on my main objective: the impact of French colonialism on these countries.

Thailand: Non-colonial Southeast Asia

Colonial Effects on Indochina

It was our first time traveling and observing the Southeast Asian region, and unveiling the impacts of colonialism on it. As South Asians coming from a former colony ourselves, we were excited to discover what this journey offered and compared the similarities with our past experiences.

After taking our First Year Program on German Colonialism with Professor  Chet Lisiecki , we were always intrigued about the other historical stories around the world. This led us to the former French colonies close to our home country. As asserted in the FYP, we believe the world only hears one side of the story for these issues and the other side is mostly silent though being oppressed in all ways. We are glad we could fulfill our objective to bring light to the impacts of colonialism on the local culture, food, and architecture and it will be an important reference for people who want to learn more about this topic.

Special Thanks

We would like to extend a massive thank you to the Keller Family for providing us the funding for this incredible opportunity. We also thank our Professor Chet Lisiecki for his profound knowledge about colonialism and guiding us throughout our project.
