South Carolina Seabird Sanctuaries

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) has established seabird sanctuaries to protect highly vulnerable seabirds and shorebirds such as Least Terns, Brown Pelicans, Black Skimmers, and American Oystercatchers. Over the last several decades seabird and shorebird populations declined, and much of their coastal habitat was lost. One conservation strategy, adopted by SCDNR, is to provide places for these birds to nest and raise young without disturbance from people.

Thus, to protect nesting beach birds, these islands have seasonal closures and special regulations.
