Proposed Apartment Block, Rathfarnham

Rathfarnham is a south side suburb with a postal of Dublin 14 and 16. Its between governments of Dun Laoighre Rathdown and South Dublin.

Rathfarnham Site

The area that i have chosen is the area on the Grange Golf Club. As you can see in this map the Edmonstown Golf Club is right next too the Grange on and there really isnt a need for two so close together. Dublin is going through a housing crisis at the moment so the land could be better utilized for things such as apartments.

Rathfarnham Cycle Lanes

The site i have chosen have many cycle lanes around it, therefore making it easy to cycle to areas such as work or shops. For example Nutgrove shopping Centre is only down the road and could be reached on bike within less than ten minutes. The bike lanes also give cyclists a sense of protection and security.

Rathfarnham Major Roads

The site is in the south area of Dublin and is well connected to the rest of the county. The m50 is right beside the site which can allow for people to travel efficiently by getting onto the motorway fast. There are main roads also leading into the inner City Center so if people wanted to drive in to shop or if they were working in town it would be accessible.

Rathfarnham Luas Lines

Rathfarnham also has an accessible LUAS stop which is the Dundrum LUAS. This is part of the green LUAS line which connect from Brides Glen to either Broombridge or Parnell. This allows quick and easy access to most parts of Dublin. The Dundrum LUAS is a 30-35 minute walk from the site or you could get the Dublin bus which would take about 15-20 minutes.

Rathfarnham Public Lighting

The Dublin City Councils public street lighting covers majority of Dublin region while excluding the south side past Dublin 16. I live in Dublin 16 so therefore i know there is an abundance of street lights and public lighting. This is important especially for the winter months when it gets dark very early. Bright lighting allows people to feel a sense of safety if taking a walk early in the morning, late at night or driving at either of these times. The DCC should expand their investigation to allow people debating about moving to this site to see if the lighting is up to standards.

Rathfarnham Public Parks

Just like the previous map, this map only shows public parks in the North of Dublin. A large Public park that is well known and quite large beside my site is Marley Park. This park is only a ten minute walk down the road and is filled with many amenities. For example the park has two playgrounds, one which is wooden and quite small for younger children while the other one is quite large and on the opposite side of the park for older kids. It has a dog park which has been separated into two, one for large dogs and one for small dogs. In the courtyard there are a few shops inside such as clothing or paintings, alongside a coffee shop and lots of benches for seating. It also has a walled garden which contains many species of flowers and plants, Budgie birds, chickens and roosters. On Saturdays and Sundays there is also a farmers market where you can buy a range of items from food to jewelry to home decorations.

Conclusion

In my opinion i feel that the DCC tends to not survey and collect data on the south side of Dublin in comparison to the North side. If i were to change anything it would be to broaden all of the research they are doing to allow for people to be able to investigate areas or easily find information on all areas of Dublin.
