The climate in the Netherlands

GENERAL

The Netherlands has a temperate climate. This means mild summers and cold winters. The official name of the climate is temperate oceanic. 

The Netherlands is next to the North Sea. The Nord Sea is cold, even during the summer. The water temperature range from 5°C (winter) to 18.3°C (Summer) over the year.

TEMPERATURE

The Netherlands has cool, cloudy, and humid weather throughout the year. The coasts are cool and windy. The average temperature range between 5°C and 14.4°C. Summers are pleasant, with a mild sun. The average high temperatures are between 20°C and 25°C. Few days above 29°C, mostly in the southeast. Winters are cold but remain mainly above freezing. The average low temperatures are between 0°C and 4.4°C. When the wind is coming from the ocean the temperature is higher, around 10°C. When the wind is coming from the East (Russia) the temperature drops below freezing. Lakes and rivers will freeze, but this is rare. Snowfall can occur but only for a short period. Spring is cold in the first half but brings warm weather by May. Autumn is warm in the first half but brings cold weather by October. Then, the atmosphere is cloudy and wet. The winds blow often, especially in the autumn and winter.

RAINFALL

The average rainfall in the Netherlands ranges between 736mm and 838mm. The rain falls throughout the year. Because the Netherlands is flat, the precipitation is uniform. The clearest skies are in the summer. The cloudiest skies are during the winter.

WIND

The wind blows a lot in the Netherlands. The average wind speeds are between 13km/h to 29km/h. Speaking in terms of the scale of Beaufort: wind force 3 to 4. The windiest and cloudiest parts of the year are between October and March. The northwest coast is the windiest region in the country.

The wind is mainly blowing from the South-West. But in Spring the wind blows also half of the time from the North-East

The highest temperature on record in the Netherlands is 40.7°C in Gilze en Rijen, set on July 25, 2019.

The lowest temperature on record is -27.4°C in Winterswijk, set on January 27, 1942.
