30 projects across 30 years

Explore the incredible variety of the UK’s heritage we’ve invested in since the establishment of The National Lottery Heritage Fund in 1994.

Introduction

To celebrate our – and the National Lottery’s – birthday, we’ve selected 30 of our favourite projects that demonstrate the diversity of the UK’s heritage and what we can support.

Since 1994, we’ve invested £8.6bn raised by National Lottery players in more than 47,000 projects across the UK.

We’ll be revealing one project per day over the next 30 days, leading up to our 30th birthday on 19 November.

This accessibility statement applies to the 30 Projects for 30 Years Story Map.

This website is run by The National Lottery Heritage Fund. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts using browser or device settings
  • zoom in up to 400% without the text spilling off the screen
  • Navigate most of the website using a keyboard or speech recognition software
  • Listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

AbilityNet  has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

  • you cannot modify the line height or spacing of text
  • you cannot skip to the main content when using a screen reader
  • some elements have insufficient colour contrast making them difficult to read

Technical information about this website’s accessibility

The National Lottery Heritage Fund is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the   Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2   AA standard, due to the non-compliances and exemptions listed below.

Non-accessible content

Due to certain constraints, we have had to include technologies and features that may cause accessibility issues. These include:

Noncompliance with the accessibility regulations

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

  • Use of Color (1.4.1)
    • Links on the site make use of an underline but don’t use a distinguishing colour to differentiate from non-link text. This will make it more difficult for users to identify links.
  • Colour contrast (minimum) (1.4.3)
    • The map counter in the bottom left-hand corner has insufficient contrast, making the numbering difficult to read.
  • Keyboard (2.1.1) and Bypass blocks (2.4.1)
    • The provided ‘skip to content’ link does not have a target. This will impact keyboard-only users.
  • Name, Role, Value (4.2.1)
    • The details menu at the top of the page uses the disallowed ARIA aria-expanded="false".
    • The container of many of the project images have a role=button with no accessible name.
    • These images also have nested controls, which are not always announced by screen readers or can cause focus problems for assistive technologies.

All three groups of issues are limitations of the GIS software used to power the website. We will continue to liaise with the suppliers to resolve.

Disproportionate burden

Not applicable at the present time.

Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

The Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018    has a listed exemption for online maps and mapping services, if essential information is provided in an accessible digital manner for maps intended for navigational use. We have provided text alternatives to the maps where possible.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

This website uses the ArcGIS platform, who provide their own  accessibility status report .

There is  additional information  on their work toward making the platform more accessible on their website.

We will continue to advocate for them to make improvements.

Preparation of this accessibility statement

This statement was prepared on 16 October 2024. It was last reviewed on 16 October 2024.

It was tested internally – utilising manual and automated techniques (which include WAVE and axe-core browser extensions), and the use of the NVDA screen reader.
