73rd Avenue Corridor

Welcome to the 73rd   Avenue Corridor Project Story Map. The City is analyzing this corridor prior to reconstruction due to known traffic issues, trail gaps, flooding issues, and the implementation of the Parks Master Plan at Madsen Park.

Please review these maps that illustrate future challenges with sustainability relating to future floods, maintenance of wide roadways, and safety on the corridor. Your feedback is needed to develop the design for 73rd Avenue.

Prior to development, the area that is now the 73 rd  Avenue Corridor included wetlands and forested areas. The roadway is now surrounded by residential, commercial, and industrial development.

The corridor experiences flooding which is expected to worsen with more extreme weather events. At left is a depiction of a 1% annual chance flood event (i.e., the 100-year, 24-hour rainfall event). At right is a depiction of the end-of-century 1% annual chance flood event, which delivers approximately 35% more rainfall volume than the current day 1% annual chance flood event. In red are the additional inundated areas in such an event. (Draft hydrologic modeling courtesy Barr Engineering).

73 rd  Avenue is the only local roadway managed by the City of Fridley with a speed limit over 35 miles per hour. There is one unprotected pedestrian crossing in the corridor in addition to signalized crossings at University Avenue, Highway 65, and Central Avenue. An eight foot trail runs along the southern side of the road.

73 rd  Avenue is one of the widest roadways in the City. The corridor width has up to 145 feet of right of way in places.
