Applications of ArcGIS Pro
Learn how to make wonderful and useful maps with ArcGIS Pro.
Are you a student at the TU Darmstadt and interested in creating wonderful maps?
If yes, then you are on the right place! Now, I would like to share my unforgetable experience during GIS II course in the winter term 2022/2023. In this course we used ArcGIS Pro from ESRI. For geoscientists, GIS is very useful and widely used. Are you curious about the applications of GIS in the geosciences? So, keep scrolling and check it out ;)
Waste Disposal Site
All human beings produce garbage. As geoscientists, we are tasked to find the best place for a waste disposal site. There are several important criteria to be considered (Przydatek & Kanownik, 2019): (1) Zone with low slopes can prevent mass movement of the waste, (2) Suitable geological conditions like low permeability rock can prevent groundwater contamination, (3) We should avoid areas with high biodiversity, (4) The site need to have a large distance to watercourses, (5) Moreover the site should be easily reached and have a short distance from the settlement.

Field Maps
With ArcGIS Field Maps, we can collect field data without the need of any internet connection. After we collect the data offline, we can later synchronize it online once we have an internet connection. We can download ArcGIS Field Maps in our smartphone. This app has a lot of advantages such as sketching capabilities, high precision data collection, location tracking, task scheduling, navigation to work locations and taking pictures ( ESRI, 2023 ).
In our study case, we collected stumbling stones (Stolpersteine) in Darmstadt. The stumbling stones are commemorative stones placed in the sidewalk in front of the houses where the victims of the Nazi dictatorship had once lived ( www.stolpersteine.eu, 2022 ).
