The History of Water and Energy Conservation
Water conservation practices trace back to ancient civilizations like the Egyptians and Romans, who used irrigation systems to efficiently manage water for agriculture. In the modern era, the Industrial Revolution brought about technological advancements but also heightened the consequences of energy and water overuse.
Because of the unregulated use of water and energy, many cultures and communities across the world are facing problems with poverty and injustice in such resources, being deprecated of some of the advantages that other communities are able to take for granted.
The 20th century witnessed significant strides in water conservation, particularly during times of drought and ecological concerns. Governments worldwide began implementing policies to manage water resources more sustainably. The introduction of water-saving devices like low-flow toilets and faucets emerged as key solutions. The global movement has constantly been expanding due to the climate, energy, and resource injustice being surfaced largely due to the growing online influence.
In recent decades, growing environmental awareness and climate change concerns have further accelerated efforts in water and energy conservation. Advancements in technology have enabled the development of more at-home and communal conservation methods, including smart water meters, renewable energy sources, and policy developments. Additionally, educational programs and policies continue to encourage individuals, businesses, and industries to adopt eco-friendly practices, emphasizing the importance of preserving these vital resources for future generations.

Conservation methods are easy to implement and, while maybe not directly, will make an overall impact on the safety of earth. Conserving also helps cheapen the costs of living for many displaced by the crises plaguing the climate.

The majority of California has been directly affected by the growing crisis of climate change, displacing countless lives and affecting numerous communities. Despite the renewable power plants available for a large portion of California, there is much more effort that must be put into conservation efforts to save these portions and better the state.
These conservation efforts may majorly be a part of the community, but countless gallons can be saved by focusing on the betterment of household habits. These habits may include time of use, productivity of energy and water, and all other kinds of appliance-based consciousness.

Conserving energy at certain times of day when consumption is highest among communities or using certain sources for cleaner power lessens the development of climate change. Personal power usage has large impacts on both the environment but also the efficiency of household ecosystems.
Although conservation methods serve great forms of bettering the environment, they also serve great uses within living expenses and cleanliness. Areas of action such as installing low-flow faucets and shower heads not only reduce water usage by 30% but lower water bills. The same effect can be seen in regulating overhead lighting usage and indoor temperature without air conditioning.

Miami, Florida faces a significant sea level crisis due to its geographical location, low elevation, porous limestone bedrock, and the effects of climate change. The city is particularly vulnerable to rising sea levels, which pose immediate and long-term threats to its infrastructure, economy, and inhabitants.
Climate change exacerbates this issue by causing sea levels to rise globally. As temperatures increase, polar ice caps and glaciers melt, contributing to the volume of water in oceans. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has projected that sea levels could rise significantly over the coming decades, further threatening coastal cities like Miami.
Some resources believe that an increase of sea levels by an entire foot in only 25 years, which would displace hundreds of citizens below the poverty line, unable to safely protect their finances and housing.
The crisis has even brought along climate gentrification that has enforced a larger rent and general living price of housing in Miami. The property fees and taxes have risen so much that many communities have been forced to shut down or relocate due to unstable finances.

Solving the Problem in My Own House
Creating a more sustainable environment for our world consists of the betterment of sustainable practices, some of the most important being conservation efforts of water and energy. Saving energy and water is an incredibly important push towards a healthier society and, as a strong, independent community, San Marcos should focus on preparing water and energy fixes using conscious efforts inside and outside of residential consumption. Some of these efforts may include sewage infrastructure and conservative water usage while others may include community education and policy changes.
To conserve energy and water, I'm adopting an approach that starts with small, impactful changes at home. Looking to install low-flow faucets and fixing leaks are my first steps to minimize water wastage. This low-flow commitment immediately leads to a 30% decrease in water usage from faucets as described by recent data research from pioneerind.com. Additionally, I plan to upgrade to water-efficient appliances, utilizing advanced technology to optimize energy consumption. Running these appliances at full capacity—like a full dishwasher or washing machine—will ensure efficiency.
Moreover, I will focus my bathroom and shower habits towards greater water efficiency. Installing a low-flow toilet and incorporating a dual-flush mechanism will significantly decrease water use per flush. I'll take shorter showers and use a water-efficient showerhead. Collecting water while waiting for the shower to warm up and repurposing it for household needs like garden watering will maximize the utility of greywater, minimizing unnecessary waste to decrease my water usage.

Community engagement is pivotal. I plan to initiate conversations with friends, teachers, and local governors about water and energy conservation. Collaborating with local businesses to promote water-saving practices and partnering with schools for conservation projects will help push these water and energy-saving tactics into a communal range.
Outdoor conservation efforts will focus on implementing water-wise practices in community gardens. Utilizing drip irrigation systems (in which 90% of the water used reaches the plants as opposed to 30% of other methods) and educating gardeners on efficient farming strategies will minimize water usage while maintaining thriving green spaces. Encouraging the use of mulch to retain soil moisture and watering during cooler periods of the day will further prevent water loss through evaporation.
Lastly, advocating for policy changes is crucial. Engaging with legislators and community leaders to push for water and energy-conscious policies and suggesting strategies like drought-resistant landscaping in public spaces will create a lasting impact. Encouraging the installation of water-saving features in public restrooms and promoting green energy usage in communal areas will contribute significantly to conserving resources. Other strategies may include diversifying energy usage over the day.
Each of these strategies represent crucial steps toward a more sustainable future. I am personally committed to enacting each of these actions within my household and I will take charge in my community to expand these changes. However, our impact goes beyond myself.
