Potatoes

Brief Introduction

Potatoes are a starchy root vegetable that is a part of the nightshade family. Potatoes can be used in many different ways from mashed potatoes to potato chips and much more. Potatoes originated from South American Ander and now potatoes are grown in many different places and come in different shapes and sizes and colours. Potatoes are a very good source of nutrition, for example, have a low source of carbohydrates and provide 10 percent of the recommended daily of fibre. Potatoes are renewable because it helps conduct electricity by acting as a salt bridge between two metals, allowing the electron current to move freely across the wire to create electricity they can produce energy for up to 40 hours but they can also be flow because continually being restored by natural recourses like water, sunlight or wind since potatoes are harvested and grown they can also be considered a flow resources  Potatoes are harvested through modern potato harvesting machines that are attached to tractors.  After 4 months the potatoes are harvested by a modern potato harvesting machine that is attached to tractors. After the potatoes have been harvested they are stored in a cool place.

Pattern and Trends

Potatoes are grown in many places across Canada and the production potato provinces are Prince Edward Island, Manitoba, Alberta, Ontario, and New Brunswick. The spatial distribution of potato farms in Canada can vary within each province, depending on factors such as soil type, climate, and market demand. For example, in Prince Edward Island, which is one of the largest potato-growing provinces in Canada, potatoes are grown throughout the island. In Manitoba, potatoes are typically grown in the southern part of the province, where the climate is milder and the soil is well-draining. In Ontario, potatoes are farmed in a lot of different areas, including the southern and eastern parts of the province. In Alberta, since the environment is largely dry and warm, potatoes are primarily grown in the province's southern region.

this graph of how many acres were harvested every year from 1990 to 2020 potato production has been mostly dry since 1990 harvested acres got higth around 2003 but the potato harvested acres are mostly dry now

This shows the average price of potatoes. Almost every year, the cost peaks in August, and by the end of every year, the price of potatoes increases. This is probably due to an increase in demand and inflation.

 Interrelationships

Potatoes are good for a healthy and sustainable earth. Compared to other fruits and vegetables the production of potatoes has a reduced carbon footprint and uses less land and water. Potatoes are low-cost, easily available, and an important part of many diets all over the world. It could be more sustainable if we use more environmentally friendly farming methods, such as crop rotation. Potatoes are the most valuable vegetable crop in Canada and are grown in every province and are important economically in several provinces. Canada produces approximately $1 billion worth of potatoes each year. The potato industry provides jobs for a wide range of workers, including farmers, farm workers, food processing workers, and truck drivers. In P.EI. potato farming makes 8,283 jobs which make up 12.1 percent of the total employment.

Geographic Perspectives

The first stakeholder I would say is farmworks and farms because they are responsible for growing and harvesting potato crops they work drietrley with potatoes. The next one I would say is companies that use potatoes to make fries chips and so on because they care about how the potatoes are and how the availability and quality of the potatoes. The next ones I would say are Canadian consumers because they are the ones that buy potatoes. The last one I would say is the government because they help them and growth and development. I would say that farmers care about climate change and pests and diseases they could have an issue with changing weather patterns on the potatoes the spread of pests and diseases and potato prices going up and the demand. I would say that the food companies would be concerned about the quality of the potatoes and availability of the potatoes, I would also say if everything becomes plant-based and people want to eat food that is good for them. I would say customers would be concerned about how unhealthy something could be and if it is safe potato products, and cost and availability. The government could be concerned about how many problems they are like food safety and economic development. I think Canada should use a sustainable farming tool to help reduce the environmental impact of potato farming.
