Western Our Way
Walk and Wheel Improvements
Project Overview
The Western Our Way Project will transform almost 11.76 miles of streets in the heart of South Los Angeles with a focus on 4.5 miles of pedestrian and transit rider improvements on the Western Avenue corridor from Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd to the north, intersecting the 10-mile east-west Metro Rail-to-Rail Active Transportation Corridor at Slauson Avenue and continuing south to Century Blvd. Adjacent local streets, Denker Avenue, two blocks to the east, and Gramercy Avenue, two blocks to the west, will be transformed into critically needed neighborhood bike network streets with traffic calming.
Project Location
The Western Our Way Project is focused along Western Avenue from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to Century Boulevard (4 1/2 miles) and parallel streets (Denker Avenue and Gramercy Place) connecting to neighborhood destinations in South Los Angeles. Project improvements will provide safer and more direct access for community members to transit lines, and local destinations including 28 schools, 6 parks, 58 places of worship, libraries, medical facilities, local and regional shopping areas, and entertainment/sports venues.

The locations for the proposed street improvements are along:
- Western Avenue (from Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard to Century Boulevard): Improvements including over 90 curb extensions and 25 bus bulbs will be constructed at all major cross streets with dual-ADA curb ramps and high visibility crosswalks; where 536 new pedestrian-scale lighting and 270 street trees will line the corridor creating a safe and more livable pedestrian experience.
- Denker Avenue (from Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard to Century Boulevard) and Gramercy Place (from Rail to Rail Corridor/62nd Street to Century Boulevard): Traffic calming and cyclist safety improvements, including speed humps and bike boxes, will connect community members to numerous schools and neighborhood services.
Existing Conditions
Tour the Corridors
Existing pedestrian and cyclist facilities are in very poor condition, have infrastructure gaps, limited accessibility, numerous safety issues due to high speed vehicular movement, long pedestrian crossing distances due to wide roadways, lack of shade and pedestrian lighting, and other safety issues. The Western Our Way Project will provide vital pedestrian, bicycle, and traffic calming improvements along key active transportation routes.
Challenges & Opportunities
During the community engagement, community members identified challenges shown in red, opportunities shown in green, and community feedback shown in blue throughout the Project area for review and discussion.
