John Bucknam House

Built ca. 1792, Georgian

The John Bucknam House is a two-and-a-half-story wood-frame structure with a gable roof and is an example of late Georgian architecture.

The house was built by one of the area's first non-native settlers, John Bucknam. Bucknam arrived in the area in the 1760s and exploited the area's extensive timber resources, building a sawmill and expanding the small settlement. He also served in the local militia during the American Revolutionary War, mustering for duty in 1777 and 1779. He died, at age 46, not long after building this house. The house is large and quite detailed for its time and rural location and includes well-preserved original woodwork.
